For my final grade in Language Arts, I need to write an essay on anything I want, so I had the idea to do a piece about theater. Only problem is I need a topic. Any ideas?

I was thinking about doing something about a Tony season, kind of like "Show Business". If I did something like this, what season should I do? P.S. It can't be this season because the paper will be due before the Tony's.

You might want to do a paper on how modern technology has changed the "sound" of Broadway in the theaters and on CD.

Thanks. Not quite what I was thinking of, but I'll consider it.

I still think it'd be fun to compare American musical theatre (or movie musicals) to Bollywood/Indian cinema.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

The first thing you need is an arguable claim. (Read: thesis). Choose something controversal that allows you to bring in outside information that you enjoy.

For example, "Microphones deminish the power of live theater by lessening the direct connection between the audience and the performer." Or you could argue that "Any prerecorded music or dialogue used in a Broadway should be because it destroys the art form."

Is this a research paper, an opinion or what? That changes your options.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Great ideas. My teacher is weird so it can be any kind of paper. Explanatory essay, persuasive essay, memoir, short story, or anything that can add up to about 4 pages or more.

Maybe you could do it on how the economy has affected Broadway. Such as how many shows are closing and stuff like that, that and how they are getting more movie and TV people in the shows to attract more people. If you can, you could even add charts and pictures of shows that closed. Hope this helps!

I just wrote a research paper for my Latin American Cultures class that could be about literally anything we wanted, so naturally I catered it to my interests and wrote about the treatment of Latin American cultures in American musical theatre. I wrote about Evita, West Side Story, and In The Heights, and compared any relevant historical information with the events of the show.

I don't know, just something that might lead you in the direction of another idea :)
