Just saw heathers at Ray of Light theatre in SF
Fun musical with some suprisingly good songs
First time at Ray of Light and really impressed with cast quality and production values
singing, acting and dancing all well executed for a regional theatre
I will go again for world premiere of Lizzy (Lizzy Borden musical) in August
nice job, Ray of Light!!!!
Of course it comes down to what shows each produce that you want to see and if they're priced in your budget.
- As a student, you likely can qualify for a cheaper subscription price for many of the companies.
- This year, ACT isn't looking likely for us, personally (ALNM is part of the current season) - but a few months after the initial announcement, they usually offer a discounted rate for your choice of X shows from the season. Their second stage, the Strand Theatre, promises to provide more experimental productions at affordable prices.
- Likewise, SF Playhouse has a "Flexpass" subscription where you can mix-and match 6 tickets for any of the shows in the season for a reasonable price.
As others have mentioned, Goldstar is the best current source for discounts.
Talking about the theater in the city....was in SF and at the Nikko Hotel (Feinstein's was the Rrazz room) in a very intimate setting (table seating for 120) saw Jeremy Jordan's show.
Jeremy sounded so good, thought he gets a little "dark" and serious in the middle of the show, talks about his mother's addiction to crytal meth (you have to see what song that segues to..) , his inability to display emotion, etc.
Played the piano (claiming it was his first played piano number) during the Last Five Years number "Nobody needs to know".
His Sondheim songs were very nice , as was his Broadway medley (Newsies, a mocking nip of "Let it Go") but his best witty snark was for "Finding Neverland".
When he mentioned the show, someone yelled from audience , "You got screwed, fu***d, " and Jeremy's response was "Well I guess I don't have to tell you what happened" . And then explained how he wasn't the only sacked as the whole UK production, including director, composer, etc were replaced.
THEN he proceeded to sing one of the replaced songs from the UK show, entitled "NEVERLAND", it sounded great and it was such a sweet but barbed shade!
Ended the show with "Smile/ "I'll be seeing you".
As usual, Jeremy was in great voice.
BTW, Faith Prince will be there 19/20 of this month.

I was there tonight too, such an amazing show. The deep, honest stuff is what I love, I saw his Breaking Character show last year too, and those were some of the best moments when he spoke honestly, and it seemed like he was even more comfortable with it this time. the openness is what I find so amazing, and to see him turn those kinds of moments and feelings into a part of his show and his art in the songs he writes, like he's not afraid for people to see that he's an actual human, i love it, and I love it because it definitely struck a nerve with me.
I loved how he went about the Finding Neverland stuff too! I was just like oh you have your sassy pants on!
He and ben need to work together for ever though, they have such a great back and forth and definitely have fun.

When I was in graduate school, I had greatly discounted tickets to the Symphony. I presume those still exist.
And one of the best people watching days is the opening night for the Opera.

saw jeremy jordan last time around-great show and feinsteins is a great intimate place to see cabaret shows(only about 120 people, no bad seats two drink min...tea or bottled water most cost effective ways to order)
Finished off a four show long weekend with a nice drive to sacramento and saw My Fair lady in the round at Music Circus. Fantastic cast of broadway veterans, a nice minor twist at the end with eliza, higgins and the slippers. Eliza maybe played the role a little to "hardened"- i like my elizas both sweet and vulnerable, and strong, and higgins pickering and alfred doolittle all played literally to perfection
2200 person theatre and NO ONE is more than about 15 rows away...
an extraordinary experience(we were front row about 1-6 feet from the action depending on how close they came to edge of stage) great venue,
After fun home and mfl, im really getting excited about in the round presentation and will likely subscribe to music circus, even with the two hour drive each way
well done sacramento and Music Circus
why doesnt SF have a theatre company that puts on original productions of top musicals with an all equity cast??? If sacramento can do it, SF should be able to do it too!!!!!
Sorry to drag this thread up again, but oh my goodness, I saw the final performance of A.C.T.'s A Little Night Music tonight and thank you so much to everyone who was talking about it, because you convinced me to actually go see it and not just think about seeing it. I loved it so much! Such a wonderful production! I saw that they have The Last 5 Years on their schedule for this end of this new season, which excites me. I Think I'm going to have to pay more attention to what they've got going on. I'm sadly out of the loop when it comes to local theter which is stupid, seeing as though I pay to much attention to theater I have to take a plane to see. ANYWAY, again, thank you guys, I'm so happy I went tonight :)
Looking forward to " Dogfight" in the fall.
