if you're with several people, carmine's is awesome.
carmine's is great with a large group.
another good italian place is on 46th between 8th and 9th (REstaurant row) called becco. they have really good food and they have a pre-theater special for i think 21.95 in which you get an appetizer of antipasto or caesar salad and then unlimited portions of the three different kinds of pasta they've prepared that night. delicious!
Pigalles
Bond 45
La Prima Donna
I like Rosie O'Grady's at 46th and Broadway. I prefer it to the one up at 52nd.
Sofia
221 W. 46th St.
It's right next to the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre (Beauty and the Beast), and is close to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Movin' Out, La Cage Aux Folles and The Glass Menagerie.
Stay away from Firebird
Overrated & way over priced
A little out of the way but good
Brooklyn Diner on West 57 th St - Their macaroni & cheese will bring back memories of the automat for those old enough to remember the dining pleasure that one experienced there. Their tag line was great "You Can't Eat Atmosphere" There was no atmosphere but the food was great
Maria Pia-51st between 8th and 9th
It's close to "Wicked", "Spelling Bee", "Little Women" and "Hairspray". Great, reasonably priced, and intimate.

Depends on your budget, if you're like me (on one), and feel like Italian, try Puleo's (II is a bit more comfortable) or Tratoria Trecolori (that's tre, not tri). I didn't care much for Becco, the 3 pasta specials didn't go together with each other, just stick to one if you go, and the tables were tiny and I felt very crammed in, but it was funny watching the waiter trying to fit everything into such a tiny space. And I agree, Carmines is great for groups, the portions are big so lots of people share. Sardi's is everything you've heard, but you gotta go there at least once, and try the shrimp Sardi.
Other than Italian, there's St. Andrews on 44th btwn 6th and 7th, Scotish and the bartenders wear kilts. O'Lunney's on the 100 block of W46th, a nice Irish pub type place, and The Afgan Kabob House nearby, even if you don't eat there, take a peak inside, it's really cool.
And if you go back to Angus McIndoe's, they have a great mix plate of oysters in season.
oh my god...whats the name of it...right next to the st. james.....uh! oh god! small place but wonderful! i met Bernadette Peters there!
I like Pietrasanta on the corner of 47th and 9th. Good food and not terribly expensive.
Kodama on 8th b/t 45th and 46th.
Barrymores (right next to Puleo II)
Pigalleys
Stay away from Puleo's. The owner is an insane alcoholic.

I love Firebird. It is expensive, but the food is divine.
I also adore Tony Di Napoli for the Bellini's.
H-E-A-V-E-N!
Sam's nice and always good food and friendly service..
Vintage on 9th near 50th
Film Centre Cafe also 9th & 45th
always line ups pre theatre ANY where in the district then its like a grave yard about 10 to 8!
I would suggest Carmine's. Great italian, big portions, etc. I went there before seeing Little Women in December, and I still have the leftovers!!! Big portions I tell you.
Plus, if you don't have reservations, but you don't mind sitting at the bar you can have the entire menu served you there. It was great the bartender was great company.
Carmine's on 44th & Broadway
I agree that Sardi's is a horrible restaurant. The food was NOTHING special and the food wasn't that good. If you've never been there, I would recommend it only because of the history that the place has.
I have enjoyed:
Carmines
blue fin
firebird (the decor is phenominal...ask for a tour, and the food is pretty good)
I would recommend you visit this site first: http://www.menupages.com/
it has a lot of menus from a lot of nyc restaurants.
Carmine's is great if you remember to make reservations. I also like Pietrasanta and Hell's Kitchen.
I enjoy Carmine's if I'm really hungry and with another person, but I don't find the food to be particularly excellent. Better than passable, for sure, and you'll be stuffed by the end, but not where I'd go for a gastronomical orgasm.
The calamari turned me on.
At Carmine's? Mmm...didn't try it. I tried the shrimp cocktail though, which wasn't bad. A good calamari can turn me on too.
I have to admit, even though we have one of these restaurant threads every week, it's the one topic I never get sick of. And I don't even live in the city. (Yet!)
Lube it up with some gravy (I like mine HOT and spicy) and you're ready to go!

Pigalles is absolutly awesome. Its quick, from what I can remember, reasonably priced, and the people there are really really nice. You can also always get in.
Cafe Un Deux Trois is right by the Hippodrome Parking/Cleaners (dont know the streets) I found the servings to be fairly large for french cuisine, flavorful, and the service relativly fast. Again, a place where reservations are not needed
Ruby Foo's, while expensive, is appealing in both decor and their food. Just be prepared with tip money for the lady in teh bathroom (I always get caught without money in my hand, and I feel bad not tipping her) I would make reservations.
Tratorria Trecolori- ah I love it! I highly recommend the Rigatoni Foccacia, its so good...the desert cart is a sight to behold! You definatly have to make reservations, its really tiny and very home-y
