Theatre Pros/Cons

Posted: 3/21/04 at 4:34pmHas there been a theatre that you really liked or disliked in particular? When I saw TMM at the Marquis theatre, I felt really claustrophobic. I had a great view of the stage, but the seats are just really tightly packed in. It was like a sardine package.

I agree with what you said about the Marquis Theatre. I felt very cramped.
I also felt that way at the Schubert(sp?). I went at the end of January when it was 0 degrees in NYC and there was a line going out of the theatre because the lobby is so small.
I love the Gershwin, because it's so big, and there's plenty of space to mill about before the show. It's a pain having to go to the bathroom though, depending on what floor you're on.

I absolutely love the Gershwin for a few reasons, mainly because of the size. I love that the stage is so big, and because of that you can see from almost anywhere.
I also love Studio 54. It has a great atmosphere, though the chairs are mercilessly uncomfortable.
I agree that the Marquis is a little claustrophobic... neat location for a theater, though, in the hotel. The seats at the Golden were SO stiff. I also really dislike the Plymouth. It felt very claustrophobic as well.

Posted: 3/21/04 at 4:54pmLOL! When I went to Avenue Q at the Golden last Sunday, I was sitting at the very top of the rear mezz, I sat down, laid my right arm on the arm rest and it fell off during Act 1!

Posted: 3/21/04 at 4:56pmkinda adds to the environment of the show, huh? =)

I think the Neder is my favorite theatre ever! Yeah, I may be biased, but I think everything i nthere has a lot of atmosphere, and it's just a really cool place to walk around and look at everything. It's a really good size, not big at all, but I didnt feel too closed in. You can see great from anywhere!
The Palace is beautiful too, it's just really elegant.
On the other hand, the Richard Rogers seemed the most cramped to me, and the seats weren't very cushy, but oh well.

Posted: 3/21/04 at 5:06pmOh yeah...forgot the Palace...I like that one a lot too. The Gershwin is still my favorite because of the size but the Palace is pretty large as well. And it's very elegant to look at, as Princess said.

Posted: 3/21/04 at 5:20pmDefinately Gershawin and the Ford Centre.. They're nice. The Richard Rodgers is OK... if your too far back the clunky balony throws off your view!

love the big comfortable ones like the Gershwin and Minskoff
Plymouth has to be one of the worst! At Taboo, we were in G Center Orchestra and there was no room at all!
Also, the Golden where Avenue Q is, the mezz is really steep. I was in 2nd row rear mezz, and I felt really high up.

The Gershwin is definately my favorite. It's so beautiful, and you don't feel cramped.
I didn't like the theater where 'Anna in the Tropics' is playing. The seats were very uncomfortable!

Posted: 3/21/04 at 6:15pmi tend to disslike the big, new theaters. i like the older ones like the Royale, John Golden, Virgina, Neil Simon etc... the have more history and they are more pleasing to look at. i am a big fan of the Royale because it is small enough to be intimate yet big enough to be spacious!!!

Theatres I've loved:
Brooks Atkinson
Al Hirschfeld (when it was the Martin Beck)
Winter Garden
Henry Miller
St. James
Shubert
Broadway
Walter Kerr
Neil Simon
I don't think there's one that I don't like. Yet...

I love the Gershwin and the Palaca, and I actually like the Marquis very much. Like someone said, it is an awesome place to have a theater and randomly riding up and down in the elevators always makes for a fun preshow activity.
The seats aren't so bad----every time I've seen the show I was in great comfort. The Neil Simon is great, because you can see from anywhere.
Like someone said, there hasn't really been a theater I've ever been to that I didn't like.

Bathroms in the Belasco & Lyceum are tiny & few . Bathrooms upstairs in the Ambassador & Imperial ( I believe )almost impossible to reach
Here is a tip that works for my wife & I - Get aisle seats far back Look at the program for the last musical number. Nudge your partner when the last musical number before intermission starts. When the curtain comes down, make like a bat out of hell & run for the bathroom

Love the St. James. And the quirky Music Box!
Hate, hate, hate the Marquis - looks, smells, and sounds like a hotel convention center.

Posted: 3/21/04 at 8:34pmBoth the Minskoff & the Uris/Gershwin are big barns. The Minskoff is slightly better

Posted: 3/21/04 at 8:49pmThe only problem with the St. James is the hike up to the balcony. I felt like I was headed for a castle turret! The Neil Simon is the best, because it's not awfully cramped.

Posted: 3/21/04 at 8:59pmhaha, try walking to up to the balcony at the New Amsterdam. I think there's an elevator, but for some reason I walked.... I thought I was going to need an oxygen tank!

The Gershwin is so big that I dislike it
I love the tiny sweet Music Box
I have a soft spot for the Broadway cause I always had a great seat for MIZ, same for St James & the Plymouth, everytime for "TABOO" a great great seat
The City Center is not a Broadway House, but I LOATHE it because the sightlines upstairs are uniformly EVIL....
At The Public Theater my fave is the tiny & intimate Anspacher
Oh lemme add I am a longtime Roundabout person, & I do not like the new space at all, though others seem over the moon about it
