Been doing some reading on this and thought I would share a list of theatres that are landmarked inside and out and are over 100+ years old.
There are 14 theatres that fit this description
- New Amsterdam - 120 years old
- Hudson - 120 years old
- Lyceum - 120 years old
- Belasco - 116 years old
- Hayes - 112 years old
- James Earl Jones - 111 years old
- Longacre - 111 years old
- Shubert - 110 years old
- Booth - 110 years old
- Broadhurst - 106 years old
- Schoenfeld - 106 years old
- Music Box - 102 years old
- Hirschfeld - 100 in November
- Rodgers - 100 in February
Theatres landmarked inside and out but not old enough- Lena Horne, Golden, St. James, Barrymore, Jacobs, Neil Simon, Majestic
Theatres old enough but not landmarked :
Winter Garden - original fascade missing
Todd Haimes - original cascade missing, interior too altered from original
Friedman - outside not landmarked (it should be!)
Palace - original fascade missing
Broadway - original fascade missing, interior too altered from original
Ambassador - outside not landmarked
Nederlander - not landmarked
August Wilson - not landmarked
Lunt- Fontanne - fascade only, interior too altered
Walter Kerr - not landmarked
Eugene O’Neill - interior only
Imperial - interior only
Studio 54 - not landmarked
Lyric - only the fascade is original, it is not landmarked
Sondheim - only the fascade is original, it is landmarked

when looking at landmark preservation status, it's interesting to really look at the building and read the history and then see where the committee made up their findings. I would say theatres that have no landmark status are in danger of modification or demolition in the future, as that is the only reason some theatres are still standing today. (The August Wilson, Nederlander, Studio 54, Walter Kerr have no protections)
The ones I disagree with the most are probably not landmarking the fascade of the Samuel J. Friedman. It's the original exterior and has some decorative elements. Some fascades are rather plain like the Eugene O'Neill.

What is the status of the Mark Hellinger/Time Square Church? I hear they have kept the theater in immaculate condition. I also know that its original entrance was on Broadway and not on 51st. Street, though that change happened long before it became a church.
