mejusthavingfun are you forgetting that the tv show is only for 2 parts but the other cast members wil be on as well and they will be multicultural I'm sure. SO no Danny or Sandy might not be black or latino but Kenickie or Marty or any of the others most certainly will be.

At least they're not desecrating a masterpiece, and they're picking qualified judges (like the unbelievably on-the-ball Kathleen Marshall, whom I will not hear a WORD against) instead of Carnie Wilson, et.al. God, did anyone see the FAME reality show? The most marginally talented and/or awful people were being gushed over as if they'd descended from heaven; I was longing for some Simon Cowell heartlessness.
Has anyone heard the rumor that Andrew Lloyd Webber is doing the same thing with a revival of "Joseph", only worse?
Switz78 - That's my point. The only two roles for the reality show are for white people.

Ugh, Billy Bush. I was excited until that...
I hope the reality show and the show itself BOMBS!!!!!!!!!!
I think it would have been a great idea say like 3 years ago. There are plenty of shows that would have been better choices. Disney should have cast Tarzan like this.
I too don't understand why they picked Grease, except it should make money and, most imporantly, it is a part of the American lexicon
I wholeheartedly agree with shesamarshmallow - Why, oh why, did they pick Billy Bush to be host!!! WHY!!!!
Didn't we already have this discussion? Who cares? Why go on about a thing as completely benign as Grease. As I said in the other thread, stop bellyaching about the one thing that might generate some good, NATIONAL press for Broadway.
Personally, I think this show will garner about as much interest as THE STARLET a couple of years ago.

hey, ya'll. one of the reasons they probably chose Grease is because the leads are young, and the final bow is pretty equally shared between Danny and Sandy. They had to think strategically in that way.
also, i think we are all going to be surprised by the number of "industry professionals" (translation: somewhat established union actors) trying to be Danny and Sandy. david ian isn't going to hand a $12million production over to novices. there will be familiar faces, be certain. that's what we should be speculating about! and we should get behind them when it's time.
ps-it probably won't be hunter and sutton.

Hell, I'll watch it. Although, the premise does seem boring to me. I'm not into the whole American Idol thing. I'd rather see a reality show about the goings on of putting a Broadway show up. I hope they at least give us a peek into the rehearsal process for the show.
And please stop whinning about it being GREASE. It's not going to change anything. My question is though, if the show bombs and nobody watches, will the revival just not happen, or would they just do it, but just pick Broadway type people? Hm. They're def. putting all their eggs in one basket hoping the show will be a huge success.
mejusthavingfun i auditioned for the show and while i made it to the second round so didn't many people of different races and ethnicities and i got cut after the second round while others went on. I can't wait to see it...also Billy Bush is not the only host a British woman Denise was hosting at auditions.

It will not be about putting on a real Broadway show
cause the cameras will be running and there will editing
to make it look more dramatic than usual.
most shows use there rehearsal time to actually rehearse and not "perform" for the camera.
Hopefully the TV audience will see what they think
Broadway is about and skip the actual show.
U can see GREASE in your Local High School anyday.
"Could they have picked a better show?"
Well, if they picked a "better" show, everyone would've been complaining that the show is too good/good enough and it doesn't need to be revived by a reality TV show.
As munk said, this is completely harmless. We're not talking about reviving Les Mis here by means of a reality show. It's Grease for crying out loud.
I'm sure by the time the principals leave the show, the hype will have died down although who's to say there will be hype just because a reality show is promoting this show? Not all reality shows are successful. Although it could bring a new audience to Broadway.
If you don't think they need a Broadway revival, no one is forcing you to see it. Of course they are going to cast like a TV show, but that doesn't mean whoever is on it isn't talented.

Bottom line is, in my opinion, if you want theatre to stay alive you've got to conform to the times. The classics will always be there, no one will ever take them away, but don't get lost in a time-capsule. Then again, this is coming from someone who thinks stuff like System Of A Down, The Darkness etc. should be the CURRENT sound of musical theatre :P
In the previews, the introduced Denise Van Outen as a broadway veteran. I knew she was on the West End, but what was she in on broadway?

i know ill be watching it. personally, i think the last thing we need is a Grease revival, but...i dunno. i think its good that Broadway is opening its doors to new performers and untapped talent. im really intersted to see what, or WHO, this show brings up.
"They picked Grease because Grease ALWAYS makes money" ~ Mister Matt.
Right you are Matt, for better or worse GREASE always comes out on top for excitement and selling on almost every level. The last production I saw in Philly featured Frankie Avalon as the "special angel" And he still looks good!
But if I have to subject myself to another Rydell High alumin, I know I will launch....but... it is was it is.
Okay, okay. I agree with every negative thing discussed here, yet I still kinda wanna see this.
if this thing's a hit it'll spawn a series of spin-offs which will heap attention on broadway (like the man said, any publicity's good publicity). even if it's not, it has the potential to get a whole pisspot fulla people who would normally never think about broadway or have any idea about it being exposed to it. so it's grease. if it's a hit the next one could be something a bit more challenging and more racially diverse. the thing is that it has the potential to focus people's attention on the theatre. can you imagine kids in pig's knuckle, arkansas talking about broadway shows (ok it's a bit of a stretch)? and let's not pretend that because the show is grease that there won't be plenty of clips showing other shows. what if one of the contestants was in something else? are you telling me they won't use footage? are we gonna pretend that kathleen's work on other shows will go unmentioned?
like it or not the reality show is here and it still dominates tv. this project has the potential to be a boon for broadway by putting the words back in the popular lexicon of the all important youth demographics. i don't see how anyone could see this as a bad thing.
why can't they pick two well-know, and well-loved, broadway stars like...kerry butler and richard blake (or others like them), to play sandy and danny? grease WILL get good audiences since it's so well-loved, so i would think that having big-name stars in the leading roles would help with that...
i'm just sick of all these reality competitions, that's all
wow! you're so right. i bet that whole thing of having it on national television every week with the power of a network behind it promoting to new audiences won't do anything for the ticket sales. it'll probably arrive dead in the water without any stars! these people obviously have no business sense.
