Especially what he has to say about John Gallagher Jr, who I saw 10 times, and I thought he was brilliant! Blake Bashoff is just as good, I think, if not better!
What a harsh review!!
OH NO! EMAIL ANN MINER ABOUT THIS TRAVESTY FROM OVER A YEAR AGO!
So other people aren't entitled to their opinions? I know there are plenty of shows/people I have adored that others didn't like. If they wanted to discuss points, I would, but I don't say "people are so harsh" just because they don't agree with me.
It's called an opinion.
Ya... and she was just sharing her opinion that the review was harsh! I agree!
does the person that wrote the review know that JGJ won a tony?
of course they know! If they are writing theater reviews they are most likely in the loop
He doesn't - he wrote it 5 months prior to the ceremony. : P
Spring Awakening
Theatre Review by Matthew Murray - December 10, 2006
Good god, this reveiw was written when the show premired, before he won the Tony. CHILL.
Hey, I used the word Tony without the little c thing. There, I did it again! Someone call A Director to put me in my place.
I guess we're all just wondering why the OP dug up a review from 14 months ago, when we all read it and talked about it back then???
Perhaps s/he just discovered Google.
Next it'll be a post linking to a 1996 thread from rec.arts.theatre.musicals and bellyachin' about how they're so mean and unfair.
That's not so bad, he justified his points and structured his argument well. And to be honest, it can be a little much when they bust out the microphones. And it was from over a year ago, chillax.
A theatre critic who liked Pirate Queen and didn't like Spring Awakening!? I'm having a secret party in my head right now!
If it's any consolation, Zeitoujo, Matthew Murray doesn't know what he's talking about most of the time. We read his reviews because they're, at worst, interesting and, at best, hilarious (Sweeney Todd 2005 Revival).
The less said the better about Donna Lynne Champlin, who absurdly plays the male barber Pirelli as an androgynous, nightmarish understudy Emcee from a reform-school production of Cabaret.
That was my favorite bit of the Sweeney review. Way to sound like a pretentious high school newspaper editor, dude! Way to go.

INteresting...
It is a awful and pretentious show. HATED IT. Agree with the review no matter how old it is.
Uh. Did anyone read Wicked's reviews?

I happen to think Matthew Murray is an excellent reviewer. He was one of the only reviewers who initially championed works like Parade, Caroline or Change, and The Light in the Piazza. Of course he's had a few opinions in the minority that disagree with public taste, but are we really going to spend time dismissing a lesser-read reviewer like Murray who more often than not hits the nail on the nose when reviewers as widely-read as Ben Brantley have been killing new musicals for years?

Who cares! TalkinBroadway.com has about as much credibility as a high school newspaper.
Quite frankly, in my opinion I don't think any of the .coms count as credible authorities on what is good and what is not. They don't have any real impact on ticket sales.
Matthew Murray is the internet equivalent of Clive Barnes. He stinks! Even though I'm not a real big fan of Spring Awakening his review was ludicrious. I strongly disagree with most of the crap he writes. Anyone care to read his Grey Gardens review? That's even worse!
I don't understand why people who can't find anything they like about Theater become Theater Critics. He onbiouvsly has is own stance on the show, but I don't think it is going to stop the throngs of teenagers that think they're going to marry Groff from going.
I also like how he talks about the characters singing songs that are commentary on their lives or something like that....isn't that the point? The songs are a modern expression of what the characters are feeling....you know....music that goes with the play....its called musical theater. It's brand new and groundbreaking and all, maybe he hasn't heard of it yet......
Art, by its very nature, is subjective. Nothing will ever please everyone. If someone criticizes a piece that you enjoy, offer the most rational and well-reasoned rebuttal you can. And who knows? Someday, your reviews may be the ones causing debate and discussion.
That's the beauty of forums like these: there's room for every possible opinion.

Aww, I like Matthew Murray's reviews. I usually agree with him.
I'll give him this much, at least he backs up his reasons for not enjoying the show. As opposed to people on these boards who choose the
YEAH WELL ITS STUPID AND YOU ARE TOO
method of review. He also seemed to enjoy Michele and Groff, so at least he didn't TOTALLY hate it. But, The Guilty Ones are probably FLIPPING OUT about it, and are planning to kidnap him and force him to watch the show until he wants to stalk all of the cast.
Oh broadway...
