Sadly for this glorious lady's West End outing this went terribly wrong thanks to a notoriously bad producer.

Hollywood and Broadway legend Shirley Jones and her husband Marty Ingels are taking issue with the way producers characterized the early shuttering of her London concert debut at the Arts Theatre in March.
A statement on the Arts Theatre's website indicated that the 12 concert run from Mar 22nd to April 3rd would end a week early on Mar 27th, due to Jones' 'serious vocal chord problems.'
Ingels says such a claim was 'an unforgivable untruth' on the part of producer Barry J. Mishon, who booked Jones and son Patrick Cassidy at The Arts
Ingels wrote in a statement 'Mr Mishon plainly ran out of money trying to meet his weekly obligations with a capacity of just 350. That wishful plan blew up in Mishon's face early on. Shirley sang like a bird every night and the audiences stood up and cheered'.
Mishon blamed London critics, who 'put the public off attending which only left us one choice, but to cancel the second week'.
Mishon said he was not responsible for posting statement on the Arts Theatre's website at the time of cancellation. He was the producer of record, in association with the Arts Theatre.
The posted explanation read 'Miss Jones had not fully recovered from the serious vocal chords problems she had from her recent 17 night concert tour in the States and against specialists orders she came straight to London. There was no way after 6 nights here she could have carried on next week'.
Ingels called the posting a 'desperate effort'.
Ingels wrote, "Despite Mr. Mishon's underfortunate judgment calls, my wife still harbors only profound gratitude for the team of dedicated professionals that hung with her to the very last'.

A very sad state off affairs fora Hollywood legend to find themselves in.
It has to be said though that this Mr Mishon has a very, very bad reputation against almost everything he has presented in London in the last 30 years. He was responsible for many one night charity concerts held at the London Palladium and Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the 1980s and 90s.
He had the ability to gather the most incredible star names from the West End, Broadway and Hollywood for the most wonderful, never to be repeated concerts, BUT when people needed to be paid a huge chunk of the takings always seemed to evaporate and many were left out of pocket. A number of big names spoke on occasion's saying that had been put up at London's top 5 star hotels only to find that on checkout Mr Mishon had left everything to them to pay for.
Every time I see his name I cant believe he still is out there!

Poor Shirley 
I had a good night at her concert, was great to hear all of her stories. It was extremely empty though which was such a shame.
Am I right in thinking the ARTS isn't part of SOLT which means no access to sell on TKTS? It seems alot of their shows could benefit from being sold on the booths.

I would loved to have seen this show.
What a horrible way to make and finish your first ever London appearance. It cant help that her long time rival in the theatre and on film, Barbara Cook, is always a sell out in London and is currently wowing them on Broadway again at age 82.
I do think it was very ambitious to have taken a two week run tho and this Mishon guy is a bad penny if ever there was one.
The Arts is an independent theatre Mark.

Aah ok, i've seen 4 shows at the Arts, it is a lovely venue (albeit some seats need a good oiling) but it ALWAYS seems so empty. I've only ever seen 1 show where there have been more than half the stalls full.

Its a bit of an iffy past the last few years. Its biggest problem has been the threat of demolition that has hung over it bit I believe it has been spared for now as the landlord wanted to build a new office block in its place but he was battled to put a new theatre there as part of the redevelopment which he refused to do and he just dismissed the plans. Good.
Its greatest years were in the 50s and 60s when it was the Arts Theatre CLub and it is where a lot of plays were presented to a 'members only' audience before censorship was abolished. In the later days, just to get round the membership rules, the fee was a little as 50p. It was a favorite house of Joe Orton and his very (of the day) outrageous plays. Tom Stoppards had his biggest hit at the Arts Theate with Dirty Linen. It ran at the the Arts for 5 years and was the last show to run under the membership scheme.
Throughout the the last 3 decades it was home to the UNicorn Childrens Theatre until they found a new home a few years ago.
