First two paragraph's of Variety's report for the week of November 7-13:

"Broadway biz usually picks up around this time of year, as sales pull out of the typically slow sessions of early fall, and this year was no exception. For the week ending Nov. 13, overall grosses grew to $17,742,402, up a hefty $2,483,563 from the previous week.

Biggest winner was "Jersey Boys" ($667,407), rising $244,669 in the wake of strong reviews (and despite the fact that the week included two heavily comped press perfs). Critics also lavished praise on "Sweeney Todd" ($568,275), but that show bumped up a somewhat less stellar $125,277."

With Thanksgiving around the corner, it's a good time for Broadway.

I'm more interested to see the actual attendance percentage of audience members than the "weekly gross". Those numbers are nice but it's more important to see how many people are attending.

Variety reports Color Purple tickets sales soar while still in previews:

"How much is an endorsement from Oprah Winfrey worth on Broadway? So far, about a couple million.

Winfrey, one of the producers of the new tuner "The Color Purple," featured the production on her talkshow Friday, and sources familiar with "Purple" B.O. say that since the segment aired, single ticket sales have topped $1 million and group sales have come in between $750,000 and $1 million.

That puts the advance for the $10 million show, set to open Dec. 1, at a respectable, if not astonishing, $6 million.

And more sales could be on the way: Scott Mallalieu, prexy of Group Sales Box Office, said that on his org's Web site, requests for group sales info about the show have more than quadrupled."
