No, ap, you're not going crazy. In 1998, they had a scene from each of the nominees for Best Play, I believe. In 1999, they did a scene which was an amalgam of dialogue and characters from the nominated plays and revivals.

I would love a special tribute to Arthur Miller.
Perhaps show longer video clips from the nominated Plays and Revivals of Plays. There is also Denzel in Julius Casaer!

Posted: 3/13/05 at 8:41pmWith regards to what La Cage would perform, I think they would follow the template set up at the '84 show, only I think they would probably end up doing the title number rather than We Are What We Are to show off the fabulous Cagelles, then have Gary come out in drag and belt his glorious I Am What I Am. Now THAT would be wonderful!

MrMusic, I don't think that La Cage has really been given respectable reviews. Passable, maybe. It's not the hit it should have been. And we haven't heard reviews for Sweet Charity yet. But with Broadway receiving (at least) 5 good new musicals, 3 decent ones, and 3 bad ones, that's much better than 3 decent revivals.
I wouldn't mind seeing Brooklyn do a number from the show, just because I respect Eden Espinosa, Ramona Keller and the rest of the cast very much. And that's totally something that producers would put on the show over a number from Pacific Overtures.
Who knows what they'll do with the extra time? Songs by Coleman and Ebb would be nice. They could do a tribute to Sondheim's 75th birthday. They could have Dame Edna, Whoopi and Billy Crystal do some schtick. And an Arthur Miller tribute would be nice too.
I, personally, get bored when they present a scene from a play out of context. Just not something I would watch. I would probably start talking to someone instead of watch.
And they can always do an extended opening number with Hugh.

Yeah, bjivie2, I see what you're saying. I just wish there were a way to incorporate the plays more. I know the Tonys are a three-hour long commercial for Broadway, and it's the musical numbers that people watch it for, but I wish that the plays could be more well represented. With the new awards being given out to the design aspects of plays, that might be a step in the right direction. Now, if they could get airtime without being boring, that would be fabulous. And fair.

I've said this before: SPAMALOT will NEVER do the "Jews" number on the Tonys for the same two reasons The Producers would never do Springtime for Hitler on TV:
1 - it might offend someone with no sense of humor
2 - it's supposed to be a SURPRISE!
I predict SPAMALOT will do "Knights of the Round Table" since it features the entire cast.

In regard to RentBoy86's questions:
1. The Tony Awards are given to outstanding plays and musical that are on Broadway. No Off-Broadway plays are eligible.
2. The Tonys are held at Radio City Music Hall here in New York.
3. The Tonys are held at night, usually beginning around 7pm for the technical awards, and then 8pm for the main awards. CBS televises them. As you can see, there is usually no need for understudies to perform, since there is usually only a 2 or 3pm matinee on Sundays.

Posted: 3/14/05 at 2:08pmthanks Melissa Ericco fan, I was waiting for someone to post something regarding that. I'm not from NYC, so I didnt know all the legistics. How do the performances work? I know they take bits and pieces from the sets and use them in the performance, but how do they get all the sets in Raid City Music Hall and put them up and take them down for every performance? Isn't that time consuming?
