This year's Tonys performances
This year's Tonys performances#0
Posted: 3/12/05 at 10:17pmAs most of you know, there are eight spots for musical performances at the Tonys, but this year, there will only be six because there are only three revivals and Pacific Overtures is closed. What will fill the extra time? Will the six musicals have longer performances? Longer speaches? Longer clips? Billy Crystal and Dame Edna shtick? I didn't enjoy def poetry jam having 2 performances, hope they fill time wisely this year. Maybe Hugh Jackman will reprise his role in BFO and ride in on an elephant in metallic magenta pants! Or Norbert recreating the Ruprecht scene with Hugh! Licking and dry-humping anyone? Forgive me if I've gone too far, but I've been thinking about this for a while and wanted to know what you all thought.

re: This year's Tonys performances#2
Posted: 3/12/05 at 10:35pmIt doesn't matter who's nominated. Only six shows will perform because of the revival situation. Let's talk about it, people!
re: This year's Tonys performances#3
Posted: 3/12/05 at 10:44pmDidn't Amour do a number from the show on the Tony's even though it closed? And I know Side Show performed "I will Never leave You" Maybe Pacific Overtures will do something.
re: This year's Tonys performances#4
Posted: 3/12/05 at 10:46pmJust because a show closed doesn't mean it won't perform. Look what they did with BIG RIVER last year - they did a video performance from their promo footage. And yes, AMOUR and SIDE SHOW performed after they closed. And you never know what will and won't be nominated.

re: This year's Tonys performances#5
Posted: 3/12/05 at 10:46pmAmour didn't perform. They showed clips from the it as they did with all nominated shows.
re: This year's Tonys performances#6
Posted: 3/12/05 at 10:54pmHmm. Perhaps I am not recalling that year correctly. Still, too early to talk about performances for this year. The Tony Awards, in my opinion, is the best variety program on television. Better than the Oscars. It's a better entertainment value. Last year's telecast was the best in a very long time. The opening number was OUTSTANDING! Choreographed all the way until each Rockette left the stage. Brilliant. Plus the AVE Q and WICKED introductions that were thrown in, in addition to the fine performances from nominated shows.

Posted: 3/12/05 at 11:02pmYou don't understand. I wanted this to be a "If DRS is nominated, they will perform..." thread, but including all shows and performers. Last year, I thought Wicked would perform "For Good" to showcase both Kristin and Idina but they did "Defying Gravity" instead. It's not that hard to guess what shows will be nominated.

Should have made that more clear.
What can be nominated this year? DRS, LW, GV, ASU, BKLYN, CHITTY, SC, and SPAM? Wow. Tough to narrow it down.

Posted: 3/12/05 at 11:34pmActually, I don't think it's that hard to narrow down the nominations this year. Of course I'm not positive, but I think many people here would agree that best bets for the 4 best new musical nominations would go to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Spamalot, Light in the Piazza, and Spelling Bee. As for what they'd perform...so far I've only seen DRS. Great Big Stuff was personally my favorite song but they'd probably pick a song to feature more than one person. Dirty Rotten Number maybe?
re: This year's Tonys performances#10
Posted: 3/12/05 at 11:35pmWell if you are asking what DRS will probably do, I am almost positive they will do "Dirty Rotten Number."
re: This year's Tonys performances#11
Posted: 3/12/05 at 11:38pmSorry bout that. I thought I'd induce responses like the Norbert/Hugh one in my initial post. Not clear enough, TARTAR SAUCE!
re: This year's Tonys performances#12
Posted: 3/12/05 at 11:53pmOkay, I'll bite - heres what I think of the shows Ive seen SO FAR! DRS - Great Big Stuff/or Ruprechts Number SPAMALOT - Id go with David Hyde Pierces Bway/Jew song in the second act. LITP - havent seen yet Spelling Bee - havent seen yet IF THEY GET IN Chitty - not sure, havent seen yet LW - Five for all Forever, Astonishing, or hell just let Maureen McGover do Days of Pleanty and bring the house down. REVIVAL Im sure theyll be some sort of PO tape LA CAGE - Seeing the Cagelles open the 2005 Tonys much like 42nd Street did in 2001 would be grand, Grand, GRAND! Although we could get Gary doing I AM WHAT I AM. How about Both?!?! Sweet Charity - havent seen yet either. Sorry I couldnt be more help, but there are still quite a few shows not yet open that hinders this game quite yet.

Broadway Betty,
Wicked had to do "Defying Gravity"...the point was to give the show exposure, and while "For Good" is a beautiful, emotional number at the Gershwin...it's merely 'pretty' to those who aren't familiar with the work. "DG" is a showstopper and that guy in middle America might be tickled to see "dat dere green girl" flying.
As for this year...I can offer that "La Cage" will likely do the title number and can-can. I'd also imagine that if nominated, Little Women would showcase their strongest link, Sutton, singing "Astonishing."

It's a pretty safe bet that the four spots for Best Musical will go to one of these six (listed in highest likeliness)...
1. Spamalot
2. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
3. 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
4. Light in the Piazza
5. Little Women
6. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
(Other new musicals: Brooklyn, The Frogs, Good Vibrations, All Shook Up, Dracula, wow, good year for new musicals...)
Here are the revival (with the same listing)...
1. Sweet Charity
2. Pacific Overtures
3. La Cage Aux Folles
(wow, crappy year for revivals... what happened to The Wiz?)
I actually wouldn't be surprised if they let Brooklyn do a performance. The Tony's this year are all about getting in a younger audience, and also a more wide-spread audience, which is why Hugh Jackman is hosting for the third time, and why they had Def Poetry Jam perform twice last year. A regular Joe is much more likely to stay tuned to Brooklyn than Pacific Overtures.

What do you think they'll do with the extra performance time made by only having two revival performances? Do you think Jackie Mason, Dame Edna, or Billy Crystal will do stand-up? Do you think that musicals will do shorter versions of 2 numbers with the extra time? Think outside the box, no nominations needed to play this game!
Thank you for your responses!

Posted: 3/13/05 at 9:02amWell, now that they have extra awards to present, they may use that time to do so.

Posted: 3/13/05 at 10:52amI'm thinking that Spelling Bee will either do the opening, "Life is Pandemonium", or a mix of a few songs. Just a guess.

If there is a God Robin Williams will do "The Stink Beneath the Ink" and the producers of the Hairspray movie will see how perfect he is for Edna and cast him to star. Because he is the funniest and most talented person on the planet...anyone seen Robots? I think he will win the first Oscar ever given for voice work. Anyone else want to see Patch Adams:The Musical?
Then the rest of the time Jackie Mason can make us all roll in the aisles with some schtick about how jewish women all sound like Fran Drescher and how OFFENSIVE Jewtopia is. As a matter of fact, they should do away with numbers from the nominated shows to give more time to Robin and Jackie. No, on second thought, that might be just tooooo funny...I would probably DIE!
re: This year's Tonys performances#19
Posted: 3/13/05 at 12:34pmI really dont think Jackie Mason will be exactly what CBS is looking for to boost its ratings. Hence the reason Hugh is back as host!
re: This year's Tonys performances#20
Posted: 3/13/05 at 3:13pmWell, if there is extra time, the producers could certainly do justice in their tributes to Jerry Orbach, Cy Coleman and the late great Fred Ebb.

I don't think the extra awards will be televised anyway, so that won't take up the time.
Whatever they do, please, no more Mary J. Blige-type performances!
And, bjivie2, a good year for new musicals, a bad one for musical revivals? I'd say it's quite the opposite. It's all about the quality over quantity with me, and although there were much more new musicals to open this season, the dismal reviews for most of them make me wonder if even four or five of them deserve a nomination. However, all three revivals were or are being given respectable reviews.
Ugh, if Brooklyn isn't nominated, we really don't need to hear a song from the show. Instead, why not give some airtime to the plays. There are some exciting performances from the straight plays this season, and although I've only seen Gem of the Ocean, which has already closed, I'd love to see some moments from the other shows, like Virginia Woolf or Doubt or Twelve Angry Men. I think that'd be great. And although it won't attract viewers too much, I really question the integrity of the Tony Awards if they choose to feature a show that isn't nominated over material and performances that are.

Posted: 3/13/05 at 4:04pmMr Russell makes a good point. There really should be something extra for Orbach, Ebb & Coleman beyond the usual In Memoriam.
re: This year's Tonys performances#23
Posted: 3/13/05 at 4:19pmso i kind of recall seeing a short scene from the play nominees at one point. the one that sticks out in my head is seeing a scene from art. does anyone remember this or know if i'm going crazy?

Posted: 3/13/05 at 4:29pmHow do the Tonys work? Where are they held? What does Broadway do on the night of the Tonys? Do all the understudies go on to perfrom in the musicals since all the stars are busy with the awards? Just a question.
