I would love it too, but unfortunately, her chances are slim to none. Show closing early, months before the Tonys, and before Lansbury and Redgrave even open in their respective shows.
It would be a miracle - and God knows she is deserving at this point - we haven't seen the others, so it's really impossible to say. I'm just sorry that she is not getting anywhere near the attention she deserves, just because her play is not as popular or well-written and produced as a certain musical. She should be getting the same amount of attention and accolades as Ebersole, IMO.
Well hey, miracles HAVE been known to happen at the Tony Awards. You just never know. But I do agree it would have to be a pretty big miracle up against those three women (Lansbury, Seldes, and Redgrave).
Not to be a nit-picker, Foster. But you might want to edit your last post on the first page. You said Julie Harris, not Julie White.
No one would be happier than I (excepting White and her peeps) if that miracle happened - I hope that point has been made clear.
Fixed, FOAnatic. Thanks for pointing that out.
Tell those other b*tches to bring it!!!
"Do you think I F*CKING traveled to the F*CKING East Coast so I could be a NOMINEEEEEEEEEE???????"
Okay, I saw this on Sunday. I thought that Johnny Galecki was actually the true star of the play. He was absolutely fantastic. He definitely deserves a Tony nomination. Everyone else was also very good. I was a little disappointed with Julie White, though, who I felt was kind of screaming her lines with a raspy, kind of annoying voice. She was good, but I think that her role was not the best.
As for the play itself, I was also disappointed. I'm sorry, Rath! I really tried to like it but I found it abrasive and sprinkled with unnecessary language. I certainly don't mind that kind of language in a play, but it just felt wrong in this play. And I was extremely bored...people started walking out after the first 15 minutes and I was jealous.
I thought that the ending (the final scene) was so ridiculous that I laughed at it. I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone who has not seen the play, but if you have seen it, I am referring to the lines of Galecki and Scott that are juxtaposed against each other ("ending"..."beginning"). Awful.
The best part of the day, though: Jane Fonda was sitting in the Orchestra section with Eve Ensler! What a great celebrity sighting that was. Jane looked gorgeous. She smiled at everyone and walked back and forth during intermission so we could all get a great look at her. And she's almost 70 years old...wow.
I don't like to post negative things on this site as I love Broadway and I love this site, but I did not want to lie and say that I liked this play. It was a tour de force for Galecki, though, and I was very happy for him. Great performance. But the play reminded me of something I wrote in high school. Very amateurish, if that's a word.
Anyway, that's my review and I hope I don't get anyone too mad. I know that if I like a show and someone else hates it that I get mad, but really I shouldn't because it's just someone else's opinion. Not every play or musical is right for every person. I do welcome your feedback, though. :)
Mimi, I think if you go back and read our reviews and comments, most of us aren't impressed with the play itself, but with White. I'm sorry you didn't have as great of an experience.
But - JANE FONDA!
You're right, Rath, I see that now. Of course Julie White is a good actress, I just thought that her part in this play was highly overrated.
And yes, I will never forget that I was standing just a few feet away from Jane Fonda. Wow, what a great sight.
Ms. Fonda came into the foundation I worked at once for a meeting, and everyone was just blown away by how beautiful and gracious she was.
The thing about White is, I thought no one could live up to the hype that she (at the time I first saw it) was getting. But she completely blew me away, not once, but twice, and if I can, I'll see it again before it closes - just for her performance. Yes, she's loud and over the top - but that's the character and fits in with the bigger picture of how she (representing the media, pop culture, materialism - at least as I see it) dominates the lives of the other characters. It's a performance I'll never forget.
Without Julie White, much ado about nothing
It was a minor off broadway worthy play elevated to Broadway because of her. By the way, she did tend to yell her lines & chew the scenery. She was the best thing about it though
I agree with you, Mr. Roxy. Julie White is obviously talented. But that play...
Saw the show on Satuday night.
Julie White IS the show. It seemed that the show picked up when she entered and slowed down when she left. The script was passable and reminded me of a typical independant, gay themed romantic comedy film.
Galecki was great, but Scott was asleep at the wheel. He should stick to films as he doesn't have much stage presence.
Matt, you couldn't have described the evening more accurately.
I saw this for the 4th time tonight, and Julie White is more on fire than ever! What a fantastic performance. She had the audience in stitches. It's nice to have a comedy play on Broadway. Those of you who have not seen it yet, try not to miss out and get your tickets before it's gone from Broadway forever.
I agree. I saw this play again last night, and I loved it more than i did the first time - which was a hell of a lot.
White was even more brilliant, and I laughed even harder. I enjoyed the play even more as well - though I had no problem with it the first time.
Please go see this show. It's absolutely fantastic and Julie White's performance is perfection.

I have wanted to see this for a while. Sad I won't get a chance, with it closing.
Really sad. This and EVIL DEAD.
BSo, please do everything you can to get there - I know you'd be crazy for White's performance! I don't want you to miss it.
How much nudity is there in this play? Is it full frontal nudity?
Full frontal. Both male leads.
Ah, a discerning theatergoer.

I saw the show two weeks ago and while I think it's less than the sum of its parts, some of the parts and a lot of dialogue is absolutely killer. I may buy the text (if published) just for the zingers.
Julie White is phenomenal...I'd heard about the over-the-top stuff too but I thought she was spot on throughout. I wanted to see the play because of fond "Roseanne" and "Opposite of Sex" memories of Johnny Galecki and he didn't disappoint. Liked Ari Gaynor quite a bit too. Tom Everett Scott was fine, but definitely the lesser of the four.
If the Joan Didion play is any good, Vanessa Redgrave's a shoo-in, but I'm hoping for a Michelle Pawk-like victory for White. "Hollywood Arms" had a similarly short run and the Tony folks still remembered her.
As for the nudity, it's relatively brief and you see more of Galecki (in all senses of the word).
