I've finally found a little bit of home in London.
1. Tony Sheldon is fierce. Enough said ... he is the complete star of the show, his role is the most developed and important, and he gets the guy in the end.
2. The new bus is fierce. When I saw the show the first time in Sydney, during Color My World I was a bit let down. I was expecting a big pink bus, and instead I got a grey bus with a few widely-spaced pink bulbs on it. Imagine my utter joy when Oli Thornton's first stroke of paint actually made a brush stroke in LEDs on the bus.
3. That brings me to my third point - Oli Thornton is fierce. Venus+the first half of Hot Stuff are nearly too steamy for the mainstream theatre. He is just so perfect, and as Bernadette says he definitely has a "body by Baywatch". Oh and boy can he sing!! Sam - good luck with your quest
4. The Divas are fierce. Zoe, Kate and Emma are all amazing singers, providing the perfect backing for some amazing lipsynch.
5. Kanako Nakano is fierce. Yes her name is pretty much n's and k's with some vowels thrown in, but she totally steals the first half of act two.
6. The Palace Theatre is fierce. The mirror balls on the cherubs, the 6 foot mirror ball, the whole atmosphere was so camp, glorious and joyfree!!
7. Jason Donovan is NOT fierce. He was the weak link in an incredibly strong show. His vocals were not steady and sometimes not even on key. His acting was wooden, and he had no star power. I much preferred with Jeremy (who originated the role in Sydney/Melbourne/Auckland) or Todd (who took over on the show's return to Sydney late last year). Jason was a definite let down
8. The bitchyness of the audience behind me was unbearable. There was a group of 20something currently out of work actors and actresses scattered all around me, who spent the whole interval making bets as to how long the show will last. The shortest bet was 3 months, and the longest was 12. Where is the support for a new West End show? Where is the support for their friends (a fact which they would not let anyone around them forget)?
Overall, I LOVED the show, loved the theatre, loved everything about it, except of course for Jason and the bitchy audience behind me.
