re: 'Three Aussie Poofs In A Bloody Big Bus' -The Reviews

you cant base an opinion of a show on that lol

Telegraph - positive

Those who like their musicals tasteful, subtle, and preferably written by Stephen Sondheim and directed by Trevor Nunn should give this wildly entertaining new import from Australia a wide berth. It makes Mamma Mia! seem like something by Chekhov.

The original film on which the show is based couldn?t quite decide whether it was a comic road movie, or a more serious study of the isolation and prejudice experienced by homosexual drag queens. There were even moments when it had a touch of the art house about it.

At the Palace Theatre, I?m delighted to report, an insanely euphoric and wildly contagious vulgarity prevails. It?s ten times more enjoyable than the screen version.Within the opening moments three exotically costumed divas are descending on wires from the flies. The mirror ball flashes round the house, while the audience is sprayed with confetti, and almost physically pummelled by some of the greatest disco anthems ever to fill a dance floor. Meanwhile I would be sacked if I recorded even the mildest banter, let alone the more outrageous jokes that grace the cracking script by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott. The word filthy is inadequate. But the one-liners and snide put-downs are also wonderfully funny and there was one gag involving a man nicknamed Trumpet and a ginger nut biscuit that almost had me out of my seat and writhing helplessly in the aisle.

The story is simply told. Three Sydney drag artistes, none of them especially happy with their lives, accept a gig in Alice Springs and travel across the outback in a bus they call Priscilla. As they encounter hostile locals, a friendly mechanic, and bitch, moan, and rehearse their lip-synching and dance routines, you come to care for them, and they come to care for each other. By the time one the trio reveals that he is married and the father of a son, while another falls in love with the apparently straight mechanic, the piece has become hugely touching as well as entertaining.

Simon Phillips?s production has a driving energy and a palpable mission to delight; the costumes aand wigs are almost insanely over the top and feature so many feathers one begins to fear for the survival of the ostrich as a species; even the bus Priscilla is an ingeniously mechanised and cunningly designed delight.

Ross Coleman?s choreography ranges from polite 1950s style cabaret to hip thrusting in-yer-face outrageousness, and the moment when a disco-version of that ineffably silly song MacArthur Park is performed by dancers dressed as lime green cup-cakes is positively sublime in its silliness.

Jason Donovan is engagingly gauche and touching as a gay man facing up to the responsibilities of fatherhood, Tony Sheldon brings a lovely dignity and warmth to the role of the elderly transsexual Bernadette, and Olivier Thornton is bitchily comic and a hell of an eyeful as the third member of this unlikely crew.

As I said at the outset, the fastidious and the squeamish should avoid this show like the plague. Everyone else will have a terrific drag ball.

If all I'd seen of La Cage was the RVP, I'd be pretty appalled too. It was by no means a reflection of the actual production and I think it was actually Norton's first time performing as Zaza in public, and such a baptism of fire might explain why he was so, well, sh*t. Seriously, it's way better than Priscilla.

I would not worry about the reviews for this show. I remember when the Queen musical We Will Rock You opened the reviews were pretty bad and one review said that you are far better off staying at home and just listen to the best of Queen cd. Now We will Rock you is the longest running play ever to be stage at the Dominion Theatre and has just started a UK tour as well. The begining of the week shows are never full, well sometimes they are but most of the time they are not and a few times I have been to a show and had an upstairs ticket I have been moved as it was not full. Maybe it might move to a smaller theatre soon if not a sell out. I am sure over time it will get a cult following.

lovepigeon, kindly take your negativity away. It begins with your profile picture and goes from there. We know you don't like the show, you've made your point, now let those of us who do like the show discuss it without your little comments. I don't have a problem with you not liking the show, no-one has to, but please stop being such a downer.

Ouch, a mixed bag here, not what I expected.

Priscilla is a show that needs a full house, for it to work, as reviews like this you need the word of mouth factor, if the atmosphere is not there in the midweek shows, it is not going to do the business, a shame.

Not on tkts today, but looks like it will be there soon.

Perhaps Sister Act will be the surprise of the year now.

re: 'Three Aussie Poofs In A Bloody Big Bus' -The Reviews

"Curmudgeonly" certainly describes some of those reviews - not that I wasn't anticipating some negativity, but I would have expected more credit to be given to the salacious fun, sheer spectacle and feelgood factor which Priscilla displays. Hopefully that will form the crux of good word-of-mouth - the 'reader reviews' on WOS are 100% positive so far.

Is it only me who finds Michael Coveney's review unnecessarily rude and acerbic? Not only does he insult two of the main leads, he pours scorn on the taste of those who happen to enjoy the show just for good measure. What a charmer!

haha people asking others to leave or not to post because they are being negative about a show they love?! Theres a name for people like that...Wicked Fans! Maybe Priscilla will be bringing in a new fan type to rival Wicked!

Seriously though, im with SADM, lovepidgeon does contribute lots, tends to be accurate, and has a brilliant profile picture! Long may Lovepidgeon continue. Also theres negativity all the time on this (and everyother) board. Just look at the flack Love Never Dies gets, and thats a show no one has heard anything from, let alone opened to the paying public.

Can't find link but in the meantime here's an excerpt:
Some of the jokes are as corny as Fray Bentos beef and, this being Australian humour, nobody gives a XX about polite language. Kanako Nakano?s show-stopping turn as a Thai bride doing unspeakable things with ping-pong balls is a benchmark for the level of humour: it really isn?t Oscar Wilde. But all wrapped up as a shiny, pink-bowed package, this sumptuously dressed show works gloriously, with its wigtastic parade of ever more jaw-dropping costumes an utter feast for the eye. Loud, lewd and lavish, it's about as subtle as a smack in the teeth with a didgeridoo, but who cares when it's this much fun?

Edited as reviews come in ... thanks heaps SADM2 :)

re: 'Three Aussie Poofs In A Bloody Big Bus' -The Reviews

Apologies for my previous post, I certainly didn't mean anything that may be construed as "Wicked-fan-ish". My issue was simply with the tone of the statement "I don't give Priscilla long at all." Which, now that I look at it, probably isn't so bad. It was about 3am my time when I posted my complaint...maybe I need to get more sleep. Hmmm.

Interesting that Variety says "Tony Sheldon repeats his winning performance from the Oz cast bringing all the wit, charm and pathos that were missing in Terence Stamp's humourless portrayal of the weary Transexual Bernadette". The opposite of what the negative reviews claimed. I'll go with the Variety review which I'd call positive.

re: 'Three Aussie Poofs In A Bloody Big Bus' -The Reviews

Not a bad bunch of reviews really.

The show has been received the same everywhere - some people get it for what it is, a glitzy feel good night at the theatre, while others see it as a heartless drag show with better costumes.

Not too bothered by these, I think the show will get great word of mouth, and do amazing business over the summer.

Tomorrow night I'll be going home to Oz (via the Palace) for 2.5 hours - really excited to see the Harbour Bridge, a sight I used to see from my school classrooms every day, as well as Darlinghurst/Kings Cross (also a sight I used to see from my school classrooms every day) with the druggies, prostitutes and drag queens all going "Downtown."
