I'd say that all of it seems to be pretty accurate with many shows that aren't huge hits on the tour market winning Best Musical, the idea of not everybody voting doesn't surprise me, and campaigning definitely works either directly or indirectly. What do you think?

They are accurate, if obvious, statements, with exceptions to each rule.

Road vote:  if there's a true horserace with two frontrunners in step with each other, I think an argument could be made that the more commercial title wins. Races that come to mind: Kinky Boots/Matilda, Billy Elliot/N2N, In The Heights/Passing Strange, Jersey Boys/Drowsy, Spamalot/Light in the Piazza. (Big exception: Ave Q/Wicked.) The smaller shows that have won were critical darlings, and there was no way Aladdin was beating Gents Guide, or Mean Girls was beating Ban'ds Visit, etc.

Voter attendance:  Can't argue with that, but it's also a myth that "voters only see the nominated shows." Don't know any actual numbers, I bet a fall show like like Head Over Heels or Waverly Gallery was still seen by 50-60% of voters by the time they closed. Especially with the new rules, voters don't want to be "caught with their pants down" if a closed show gets a bunch of noms.

Campaigning:  Like he says, campaigning is a way to remind people of the work –– but the work has to be good in the first place. A splashy campaign can't turn a "bad" show into a winner. Example: Beetlejuice has never been a frontrunner, and a multimillion dollar campaign to voters wouldn't have changed that.

The author of the linked article wrote:

"And this Sunday looks to be one of the most exciting in terms of the number of possible upsets!"

Some people might consider them upsets, but I see them as certainties.

"So, you’re tuning in, right?"

Nope.

I think the roadie block still matters. There are roughly 100 of them out of 800 voters. In the examples he gave with Band’s visit winning last year, Nyc based voters may have given 600-700 votes to band’s visit and the roadie block may have gone 100 to Frozen or spongebob. Who knows? We’ll never know how influential the roadie block can be unless the Tony folks publish the % results.
I do know that the roadie block still matters when you see producers catering to them and inviting them to special events during the Tony voting period.

i think its cute that people still think awards for art are about the art themselves.
its all about money. Who makes it, who spends it, who needs it to keep surviving.

They should end this BS "awards" show and just have a broadway day and do performances of the shows on broadway, because its just a big commercial anyway.
