Posted: 5/27/06 at 10:00pmI really wanted to see it. Alan Cumming was born for the stage.

Posted: 5/27/06 at 10:17pmI think Alan Cummings is great. Any other suggestions besides Drowsy Chaperone and Wedding Singer. A few I looked into have a July 2 closing date.

Hi-
I saw Threepenny about 3 weeks ago and I found it to be a mess. The night after I went to Drowsy and Jersey Boys and there is no way to compare the shows. I realize that they are all very different but Threepenny Opera may have been one of the all time greatest let-downs for me. But judge it for yourself-- everyone is different. I just wanted to let you know what I thought.

Posted: 5/27/06 at 10:46pmOkay...I clearly did not get to see the original Threepenny Opera, as I am a 14 year old girl. I did not get to see any recent production of it either. This production was my first (live) experience with the show and I loved it. Visually, it is fabulous, and the whole cast is great. I am very familiar with the original cast recording, and I liked many of the new translations more than what I know of the originals. I am also very interested in Brechtian style and theory so I was basically fascinated the entire time.

I suppose there might be a few people around who saw the original 1928 Berlin production of The Threepenny Opera (or Die Dreigroschenoper), but I doubt that they post on this site.
Though you never know.

Posted: 5/28/06 at 6:13amI thought Alan Cumming was totally miscast in this production; his Macheath just faded into insignificance for me. The show became about Polly, Jenny and Lucy, but without the center that Mackie should provide. I quite liked the production, but it was pretty uneven. At least most of the choices were interesting, even if they didn't all work. Most of the new translation caused me physical pain, though.

I say read the book (which is fairly short) and try to pick up the 1954 recording. The more you know about the show, the better.
Personally, I though the show was very good. The cast is amazing and it is a very unique production. I cant wait to see it again. Enjoy!

Posted: 5/28/06 at 8:19amI loved it! Nellie McKay took a little getting used to for me but I grew to really enjoy her performance especially. Then of course there's Cyndi! WOW!

Posted: 5/29/06 at 12:25amI actually Loved it!! I think it was very unique and it was probably the weirdest b'way show I've ever seen but i thought it was great. I agree with Feathah about having to get used to Nellie. But I thought she was hysterical. Brain Charles Rooney actually stole the show in my opinion. Jim Dale... I cannot believe he was able to move so well around the stage. I was very impressed. Then Ana, Alan, & Cyndi, I love them to death and I thought they were great!!! However, some people left during intermission and others were disappointed in it after it was over. Just keep an open mind. I would actually see it again!

Posted: 5/29/06 at 3:48amBroadwaylady, I didn't like Sweeney either, 3Penny is a long 3 hour show and it didn't engage me, well, until Brian Charles Rooney sings in the 2nd act. Don't miss The Wedding Singer, it was hilarious.

Posted: 5/29/06 at 4:21pmThanks Muscle. I am trying for Wedding Singer and Drowsy as we speak. I can't believe orchestra center is $251.00. I can't afford that. I had those seats for Jersey Boys which was the best because I am Italian from very close to Belleville NJ and I love the music, but those seats were a birthday present. I am going to read up on the story of Three Penny Opera. I know it runs 2 hours and 50 minutes with a 15 minute intermission.

Just so you know, Muscle has fairly poor taste in shows...
