Accents.
Silly, I know.
There are some other reasons, as well. But I don't want to say them here.

Any other plays less along the lines of Deathtrap...Not necessarily scary.
Also, perhaps something that is a little experimental...
Maybe something more modern?
Maybe something with shock value - in the plot...twists...I am not sure.

When I thought shock Albee's The Goat occurred to me. It not so much a thriller but it's psychological and there are some interesting twists and shocks.
The other play that I remember is The Dying Gaul by Craig Lucas. It's three characters and the play watches as they twist and change before us. It also has some internet/online chat scenes that would probably be fun to play with.

And it was Kelli O'Hara's movie.
Thanks. Actually I considered the Goat.

I know I've mentioned her in other theads but anything by Sarah Kane would work.
Try "4.48 Psychosis."

I would seriously second Anthony Shaffer's "Murderer" for it's breath-taking opening and seriously...fourth Ira Levin's "Veronica's Room". That one is an evil little chiller of a play.
There's another overlooked thriller from the '60's called "The Playroom" by Mary Can't-remember-her-last-name about a group of spoilled/misunderstood wealthy kids who fake a kidnapping. The original kids on Broadway included Karen Black, Richard Thomas and Christopher Norris.
You might want to try to find a copy of "Children,Children" a thriller in which Gwen Verdon made her non-musical stage debut about a baby-sitter getting psychologically terrorized by the children she is watching. It closed on opening night.

OK. Thanks, Em.
I realized that today...that I spelled his name wrong.
Way wrong.
S'ok...I just had a test and used it (correctly).
Thanks guys! Now let's stay away from the horror thrillers and get back more into real plays...like Tracy Letts.

call me crazy, but The Crucible has never failed to scare the sh!t out of me. McCarthyism in general frightens me.
if you're not with us, your against us...
chilling

Posted: 5/4/06 at 6:43amEquus would be good, as someone mentioned. My first thought was the Crucible. But I think a really good one would be Buried Child. There is some really dark humor, but it's very heavy and has some good twists.

Heiner Muller plays? Something like Hamletmachine... that's pretty dark and strange.
I've also seen two VERY dark productions of Wedekind's Spring Awakening, I would imagine there is a lot you can do with that one.
I'm sure there are quite few things out there, but I agree, it's hard not to think of McDonagh.
