Posted: 7/29/05 at 3:36pmI love Angels in America! However it did not reach as wide of an audience as Rent did. My belief is that theatre is for the audience and only the audience and because Rent reached such a wide audience it was original. it found a way to talk about these issues and capture the attention of numerous people. I have seen ttb and i have the cd and i find it fine. and oh yeah emcee my exposure is not minimal I just am a lot more drawn and effected by such musicals as Merilly and Light.

I think you should stick to one story - first post, honestly, really arrogant about how there's no comparison. Now you "find it fine."
Not worth my time.

re: Tick...Tick...BOOM! vs. Rent#28
Posted: 7/29/05 at 3:40pmI love both shows, and I really can't pick one. They both have amazing music. "See Her Smile" from TTB is one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard-- it's constantly on repeat. It can get me crying instantly. However, "Goodbye, Love" and "Another Day" from RENT can do that too. Story-wise, RENT grabbed me more, and made me become "obsessed" at one point (I'm pretty much over that now). TTB, however, is just a gorgeous piece of theatre. So really, I can't decide.

Cute.
I'm in front of a computer most of the day anyway, and I owe you no further explanation. Pick on somebody else - someone just as pompous and "all-knowing" as yourself, please. And it's more precious than to give you much thought with it, sweetie.

I love you Em! We appreciate your posts!
COllegeKid---Just because you have a different opinion doesn't mean you have to trash someone.
Actually, when you write rude things like that, it makes your opinion look less valid.

Posted: 7/29/05 at 3:46pmIMHO Tick, Tick Boom! was Jon's greatest work. I love Rent but TTB is just so affecting and emotional. Not to mention it has a sharp book and a score which i can honestly say i enjoy more than Rent's. (especially with Raul singing it) Now if i can here NPH as Jon I would be amazing.

Hey now, CollegeKid...respect Emcee. She's a nice girl. Leave her alone. And guess what? I spend most of MY time front of the computer too! (Only when I'm not doing theatre or school things)
CollegeKid, is this all you thrive on? RENT? Because there are other musicals that can reach out to a wide audience.

I was trying to find the perfect Raul pic to post for you, but they're all perfect and I can't choose!
PS: Angels in America reached a lot of people. It is frequently performed and has a major mini-series. People are very aware of this show.

gav, for the record - CK said s/he didn't love RENT, and has seen TTB.
Back to topic, what I love most about the TTB CD (though I think RENT's score is more diverse) is how Raúl poured such a range of emotion into each song - the CD is almost entirely him, but doesn't get boring.
ETA - they are ALL perfect, Bobby.
Un momento, I shall post an appropos photo.

I can think of several other shows on Broadway that dealt with AIDS long before RENT, such as FALSETTOS, LOVE! VALOUR!COMPASSION! and ANGELS IN AMERICA pop to mind.
While I like both RENT and TICK, TICK, BOOM! I think that I can't help but not see TTB as Mr. Larson's true handy work. Yes, he wrote most of it but he didn't work with it as he had done with RENT. Does that make sense?

Posted: 7/29/05 at 4:02pmI think you guys are missing my point. I am well aware of the previous shows that talked about AIDS, etc. I just personally find it to be amazing that an overwhelming amount of people who otherwise are not "theatre people" no every lyric to Rent. The show had a huge impact on pop culture (hence the movie). And for that i find it to be quite amazing. THEATRE IS FOR THE PEOPLE

Just to add to what's being said about musicals dealing with such issues pre-Rent: What about Torch Song Trilogy, or even La Cage for that matter? It may not have dealt with aids or poverty, but it sure as hell put homosexuality on the map, and led to a hit movie that broadened the horizon. What about these shows? Rent WAS new and different, but I wouldn't really say groundbreaking. What about The Normal Heart? Rent was not the first show to deal with these issues...
Oh and for luvtheemcee: See above... simply adorable...

Posted: 7/29/05 at 4:07pmit definitely is. But lets be honest a normal non theatre person, especially those that are younger in age 1) are probably not aware of the piece 2) do not find it accessable...thats all....
