Hi,
Still busy with my analysis of ttb, I have some questions about the music in the show.
*I know the song sunday is originally from stephen sondheims sunday in the park. Are there any other directions to other shows (i know a lot from rent is also from other show songs).
I also have some other more music-analytical questions:
- How do the keys of the songs interact?
- Is there a structure to the tempos and musical styles?
- What relationship does the melody have with the meaning of the lyric?
If you can help me with anything please cntact me at nachtvlinder_queenie@yahoo.com
Thank you very much!

Two songs from West Side Story are referenced in the song, "Why". They are "Quintet" and "Cool" - Larson uses snippets of them, such as; "Gotta rocket in your pocket" and "The Jets are gonna have their day - tonight!"
"Come To Your Senses" is from Larson's other show, I believe its name is Suburbia.

I just saw a local production of this show. This has probably been discussed, but are 'Michael' and 'Susan' real people in his life. Also, who was Caressa(sp?)? I felt like it was supposed to be Idina Menzel for some reason.
Anyone have a site to find out more?

Karessa is not Idina Menzel, since I don't believe that Larson met her until auditions for the off-Broadway production of Rent, and tick, tick...BOOM! was being performed in 1990. I think that she's just a stereotypical actress type.
The characters are probably closely based on real people but not entirely faithful, although I'm not sure about that. It seems pretty clear that Michael is based on Jonathan's real-life best friend, Matthew. I'm not sure if the Susan character represents one specific girlfriend.

Posted: 3/23/07 at 3:33pmI've never seen a production of this show, just listened to the cast recording, so tell me, does the song "Sugar" refer to either prostitutes or drugs? (Or am I completely wrong?)

Neither. It's about real sugar.

Posted: 3/23/07 at 3:56pmIT's Superbia. Suburbia is a play by Eric Bogosian.

Well, to be fair, there's also a line about he feels like a teenager who's buying condoms for the first time.

Posted: 3/23/07 at 4:10pmSuperbia is... sort of a musical version of the novel 1984. I believe something happened in terms of rights and copyrights which stopped the show from ever developing further.
