I see a current trend starting of mentioning everyone that's ever been in a rock musical to try the part of Jonathan, but I think Carey Shields would be great - he can actually act.

Can I tell you how much I laughed at him in SLC Punk?

He can danced choreographed stuff surprisingly well. He shocked me in Cabaret... but if he's just messing around, he CAN NOT dance. It's hysterical, but oh-so endearing.

Edit: I heart Cary Shields. I'm dying to see his Roger - he's back in January, I heard.

Yes, and he's a swing right now in RENT. He's the best Roger I've ever seen - and I've seen them all.

Yeah, Jeremy leaves the 14th, and then Cary is back. Well. No, hes back already. Ive seen him floating around after shows.

He really is hot in person LOL

*edited to add*

Adams hair is SO bleached blonde in SLCPunk! I breifly thought he was bald, and I was like OMG what did you DO!? ANd then I saw the outfit he was wearing, and laughed. And then, the brittish accent killed me. LOL.

The 14th of? I'll miss Jeremy - takes A LOT for someone to win me over as Roger, and he did. But yay Cary.

I haven't seen Rent in a LONG time.
The last time I saw it, I really hated it, and it was so good the first time I saw it too.
I wish Trey Ellet would come back to play Mark again.
Edit-But I'll probably go to see Cary.

Trey is the 1st and last good Mark I've seen out of 7 Marks in 10 trips to RENT over the years. I never saw Anthony or most of the original cast. I really loved that 1st touring cast I saw in SF 1999- Trey Ellett, Dean Balkwill, extremely attractive Irish gal as Maureen, Daphne was on for the SF stop, Chuck Wagner was doing Jekyll across the street, THOSE were the days! But yeah, Trey really delivers a different type of Mark than most you'll see and the guy is all personality.

Trey is the only mark I've been entirely pleased with. joey fatone wasn't all that bad by the end of his run, either. Nowadays, Matt Caplan has gotten way to comfortable in the roll and his performance and the show as a whole suffers. I haven't seen Drew yet, probably this weekend.

a lot of the die-hard Rent people don't like Trey because he makes no attempt to play it like Anthony did. There have been plenty of different styles of Mark, but most seem to root at least part of their performance in the original interpretation, which does make sense to the extent that the originals were the only cast to work with Larson, so they had a more direct path to what was intended.

But Trey just brought something very different. He's from the midwest, I believe, and he plays the character less specifically Jewish. I think that helps him avoid falling into caricatures/exaggerations.

Did anyone else love Dean Balkwill as Roger? Man, it's weird thinking back to when there was such a thing as a good RENT cast.

Oh Matt!!! You have put two wonderful people in the same post!!!
Trey was great. ::whines:: I want him back on that stage! He was genious, and then he just seem to drop off the face of the earth. I would like to see him in anything-especially TTB).

And Chuck Wagner in Jekyll and Hyde!!! Ahhh! Good times!

::sigh:: Me too! Do you know if he is Tom Hewitt's body double in Dracula? I figured it might me, but it could be the understudy (can't remember his name).

Graham Rowat is the body-double - it was mentioned in a caption on one of the broadway.com photo-ops.

I liked Trey's Mark. He and Matt Caplan are the best I've seen on Broadway, but Neil Patrick Harris is the best Mark I've seen overall.

Broadway Matt - I saw the cast you're talking about, but in Los Angeles right before they went to San Francisco. I believe the Maureen you're talking about might be Erin Keaney. I might be mistaken, but I think she's the one I saw in L.A.

Dean Balkwill was a damn good Roger. One of the more intense ones, and one of the few who gave "Your Eyes" more meaning.
