Depp can sing?????
Apparently he used to sing quite a bit when he was younger, yes.
I had been thrilled about Mendes, but this idea excites me too.

Mmmmm. This will be interesting.

That is perfect....1 question though. How long before we hear that Helena Bonham Carter is Mrs. Lovett?
This is so wrong on so many levels.

Why don't Tim Burton and Johnny Depp get freaking married, seriously.
Ok, not very funny but I think it's time for Burton to get a new actor for his movies.
If they like working together, I think it's great. I'd like to think that more people would show that type of loyalty to their friends and co-workers in their career moves.

Once again, popcultureboy and I are on the same wavelength. Johnny Depp? Johnny Depp? Unlike many, I feel the man can do wrong, and playing Sweeney would definitely be an example of that.
Depp plays man-boys, and despite being 40-something, he'll probably never grow out of that. And that's not Sweeney. Burton is an interesting choice for the direction, but I'm not feeling the perfect synergy between his style and the material like I did with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And Burton is no chameleon- he'll do things his way every time, even if he has to twist the material to do so. (Just read some of his ideas when he was slated to direct Superman.)
Bad, bad, bad idea. I'm not happy with this. On the bright side, it's just a rumor, and there are so very many ways something like this can be killed in pre-production. For once I'm glad of the existence of Development Hell.

I really cannot see Johnny Depp as Sweeney. I don't have a good reason why; he just seems wrong for the part.

Plum I agree with you about Burton. He wants to leave his own mark on everything he touches....
Yankeefan I was thinking the exact same thing!!!
I have yet to see Depp do something that was beyond his reach. He is like a chameleon and I would not be surprised if he blew us away in this. But Burton does so often try to make a "Tim Burton Film" that I hope Sweeney does not get lost in it. I don't think he would cast Helena as Lovett though. But who will he cast??
Hmmmmmmmmmm.
Does Sondheim have a say at all with what happens with this movie?
Depp attracts a lot of the teenie girls - those teenie girls mixed with Sweeney Todd - is not a good mix!

Ehh..as a high school senior girl, I can tell you that even Johnny Depp will not pull in people to a movie they aren't really interested in. I have a feeling Sweeney won't be the most appealing to a lot of teenage girls, despite their love for Johnny Depp. Look at Secret Window(which I think just looked unappealing to everybody...) and Finding Neverland, which definitely escaped the teen girl fandom and is a critically acclaimed box office smash, which a lot of my friends have refrained from watching, despite Johnny Depp being in it, for it being too serious.
Now about Johnny Depp being good in the part, I have no idea, as I have never seen Sweeney
If/when the casting is confirmed - it'll be both positive and negative:
1) I'll be EXTREMELY interested to see what Depp does with the role. It'll either be a big hit or big miss. I didn't like him as Wonka. I didn't like what Burton did with Wonka. I didn't like Corpse Bride, but it had good elements to it.
2) It'll attract a huge audience to the movie musical and hopefully shed positive light on the genre.
It'll be interesting to see if this movie really happens and if it does then I'm really looking forward to seeing it. I really want to hear Depp sing!
Oh, dear, the dreaded "anonymous sources." Hmmmm...let's believe it when we see the first production photos, not before.

As much as I adore Sweeney Todd as a show, I don't think it would be at all successful as a film. I'd love to be proven wrong though, and I think it's right up Tim Burton's alley....
INTERESTING. I don't even know how I feel yet, I'm just intrigued.
I agree 100% with Plum. I don't think they are right for this and so I'm glad that so far it's just a rumor.
Pinguin, you summed up my thoughts exactly. I am not sure how I feel about this. My initial thought is that I like the concept of Depp more than I do Burton.
I actually think Helena Bonham Carter would be pretty damned great visually as Lovett.
I'd like to see Victor Garber play the Judge. That'd be a nice full circle.
wait Johnny deep and Sweeney todd?!?!!? Thats one of my fav.e musicals! whoa....crazyness
Maybe Cyndi Lauper will get to play Lovett in this?
I still want to know if Sondheim is invovled with casting.
tim burton was one of my top choices to direct this movie so i am excited about him being the director..i'm suprised about depp being sweeney but hey maybe he can end up pulling it off. i think Helena Bonham Carter would make a good begger woman or mrs. lovett if she can sing tho.
If Cyndi Lauper ever plays Lovett, Whatever the idiom, She will blow everyone away. She remains the best kept secret of the industry. I wish her well in TO. She'll ROCK as Jenny!
Burton & Depp can be quite creative. Let's see where they are going with this. Burton's dark side will go wild, He may need Depp in to keep it honest.
