TONY just put up its divalicious list of the 25 best leading ladies to grace a Broadway stage. Check out who's on top and who's on bottom!
25 GREATEST BROADWAY DIVAS
I agree with the names on the list, but not having Mary Martin as #2 sort of negates the whole thing for me.
I did enjoy it, but I think that the top few slots would work better as:
6. Bernadette Peters
5. Patti Lupone
4. Angela Lansbury
3. Mary Martin
2. Gwen Verdon
1. Ethel Merman

In a time and age where today's sensations are tomorrow's memories, it is heartening to see that Ethel Merman remains at the top of everyone's list. I had the good luck to see her four times, including the original Rose, and she delivered like no one before or since. Congratulations again, Ethel -- you're back where you belong!
On another note, unless the rules were to limit the selections to the last 50 years, certain names that I've heard of but who were way before my time come to mind: Lillian Russell, Marilyn Miller and Fay Templeton in particular. There's little, if any record of what they were all about (Miller's movies are awful)but I'd be willing to bet they were sensations at the times they were performing.
Keep it all on one thread, y'all!
