Here's a picture where you can see a bit of the New Amsterdam roof theatre from one of Ziegfeld's Midnight Frolics, circa 1918.

To those who bash Disney, what they did to the New Amsterdam is miraculous.

The Hellinger had an entrance on Broadway which was gutten years ago. It is in great condition.

The Mayfair/DeMille , depending on its condition, could be a great musical house as it is big enough . How much of the interior remains is unknown. The location is great.

I remember seeing an Off Broadway musical in what was the Diamond Horseshoe. It would be great to bring it back as an off broadway house.

The Hammerstein (Ed Sullivan) will be hosting Letterman for many years to come. It was quite nice before it was renovated out of existence.

I am still on the edge about if I am a fan of disney on broadway or not. But, I do love what they did with the New Amsterdam.

And, what people don't reaize is this. That the whole " Clean Up Times Square" thing was an idea Rudy had years back. It was going to be a project that would requier private funding in order for it to work. When disney found out that thier theatre would be next door to a strip club they were willing to pay for all the funding.

As a result, the strip club turned to a disney store at the start of Lion King's run at the theatre. And now it is just an empty store front still owend by disney.

As for times square itself. Insteade of having to deal with the whoring of sexual incounters as we did in the past. We now have to deal with the whoring of Corprate America. Personally I am not sure which one is worse.

There were things that were gained and things that were lost in the redevelopment of Times Square. Yes, it's safer, cleaner, all of which has boosted tourism for Broadway, which in the mid to late '80s was not looking so robust. But the mix of movie palaces, arcades, lo-rise oddball buildings housing mom and pop businesses, porno emporiums and strip clubs, coexisting side by side with the Broadway theatres just gave a unique and authentic character to the area that no longer exists. It was an experience you just couldn't get anywhere else. Perhaps I was lucky, but for all of the "danger" of the old Times Square, nothing ever happened to me. The new Times Square can be exciting too, but it has the feeling of manufactured excitement... like you are an unwitting part of a great big outdoor studio audience for some Viacom reality television series.

No, what's sad is that they would turn a beautiful Broadway theatre into a church.

I am shocked that the store hasn't opened yet. I am almost sad to say this but I think that the store would have fit in well with the other retail shops in the area.

To Winston 3

If might have been torn down if not for the church. Turning old theaters into churches is a common occurence. Once some of the big old theaters were being dumped, many were donated to religous groups for a tax write off.

One that was not donated but was purchased was the old Loews 175 th Street in Manhattan. Rev Ike payed, I believe , $ 750.000 for it. He has kept it in mint condition. He also rents it out for various functions. It is now the United Palace. It seats about 3,300.

It is worth it to go there for a pipe organ concert. The original is still there & the theater is breathtaking. It is middle eastern in style.
