Without proffering a suggested title, I would suggest that the next network competition for a lead role in a stage show should be judged by Eartha Kitt and Elaine Stritch. That would be something I would tune in to see.
Otherwise, when I next speak at workshops for aspiring actors I will be sure to mention that they can skip the vocal coaching, dance lessons and acting lessons and cut to the chase by getting on network TV and shooting straight to the top (with or without talent). The cynic in me says that this is more proof of the end of civilization as we know it but frankly I do not have the energy to argue with those who think this is a good way to cast a stage show. I would say that the $100 plus price tag on most theater tickets is pretty steep when you consider that these kids will have to be taught the difference between downstage and upstage and stage right and stage left. Whatever the market will support, I suppose but I am not a fan.
