it's British in origin, "tony" meaning "posh" as in carrying a very high tone of taste....I thought everyone knew that.
Or it's named for the lead in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER...the American Theatre Wing LOVED that movie! it even had dancing in it....

"Tony" was named after Antoinette Perry, a Broadway producer (she did the original Harvey back in 1944). She had died unexpededly at a relatively young age at the time that the Tonys started and it was in commenoration of her.
I answered it in the first response to the thread.
Tony Soprano.
He threatened the League and they capitulated.
good one, TAZ.
There's a new award called the Toni (with an "i") for road performers, named for Toni Tenille after her triumphant tour in Victor/Victoria.
I thought the Toni Award was for "most outstanding perm".
Maybe your right, it was first won by Bette Midler in the '70's for her "Clams on the half shell" Broadway show perm, right?
