I disliked Fun Home and slept through ONCE. Both of those years there were much better shows and I think this year will be the same situation with TBV.
With Frozen and Mean Girls being assembled by the best of the best, how are we so sure that TBV is a lock for TONYs?

Just curious, which shows did you find better than Fun Home? I loved it and thought it was the best that year.

Distressed? Really? About a musical that may win Best Musical? Ooof what planet are you living on?
Mean Girls may have a great cast and Tina Fey is a stellar comedy writer... but Jeff Richmond hasn’t really written a musical before (that got produced, at least) and out of town, it showed. Luckily they’re making lots of changes for Broadway (so I’ve heard)
Frozen also has a great team, but got some pretty lukewarm reviews out of town. They’re changing about 30% of the material before it opens.
It’s kinda a crap shoot. But The Band’s Visit is a favorite because it’s an original musical that isnt based on a (well-known) existing property. I was rooting for it too, until I saw it.

Yes, let’s pick at people’s theater passion on a musical theater message board. Aren’t we all posting here because we like theater maybe a bit too much?

I remember getting in line at 7AM for tickets to an evening performance of Color Purple the day I saw FunHome’s Matinee. I just remember feeling so sad and depressed after leaving the theatre that day because of the story- which is probably exactly how you’re supposed to feel, idk. Then that same night, after seeing Cynthia Erivo and Heather Hedly in Color Purple, I felt as if my entire afternoon at FunHome paled in comparison to the truly entertaining and emotional evening I had at CP. Honestly I might have had a different experience if I had only seen one emotionally draining show that day, but I went into both theatres expecting nothing, which is what I always do.
That year I also saw Something Rotten, the most vanilla show ever, but still more fun than Fun Home.
As for ONCE, I’m just bitter because Newsies had everything you could ever want in a show, yet it still lost.

What meaning do you believe the show thinks it has but doesn't?

I left Newsies at intermission because it didn't have everything I could ever want in a show. I saw Once twice because I found it creative and beautiful and I'd happily see it many times over again.

It's also a favorite for its intriguing and funny book, alongside a unique score, which delivers a beautiful style, representing a culture that has rarely been highlighted in a Broadway musical. The reviews do a good job at articulating why its a favorite for the award.
The naysayers of this show are few, but loud.
It tells me that someone isn't a very observant person when they see something like The Band's Visit and then claim that nothing happens in it. Frankly, if The Band's Visit were a play, it would be exactly what we would expect. Why do musical theatre audiences expect so much glitz and glamour? I mean, I love Hello, Dolly! and all that golden age glamour, but sometimes I want some just pure humanity like The Band's Visit and Fun Home. We seem to expect grand proclamations of love and what not from The Band's Visit and instead we get something much quieter, but just as profound. Just because you didn't get it, doesn't mean nothing happens.

Thanks, everybody. Now I’m extremely happy that I bought premium tix to TBV when I did.
Definitely gonna check out Once On This Island as well. Love the circle in the square theatre and the opportunities it presents for staging a show, so I’m excited.
