re: Tony Awards '08: LuPone vs. Murphy

To me Sally is the real lead of FOLLIES. But I consider both Sally and Phyllis leading roles.

There's no chance in hell though that Sally would ever be considered featured. Especially with Vicki's stunning performance.

Anyway. It' highly unlikely FOLLIES is transferring.

>I would think Sally would be leading and Phyllis:Supporting.<

Except that Alexis Smith won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for playing Phyllis.

Yeah. That's the thing. Phyllis is usually played more by "name" actresses. So they usually get first billing, etc.

But I think first billed should be Sally, then Phyllis, then Ben, then Buddy.

re: Tony Awards '08: LuPone vs. Murphy

And don't forget Blythe Danner was also nominated as a Leading Actress for playing Phyllis.
I think Phyllis can be a leading role, it certainly was in the Encores! production due to Murphy's stunning performance. From the soundboard of the original production it is also clear that Alexis Smith brought a certain quality to Phyllis that made the role as significant as Sally, IMO. However, I think depending on the director and the actress, the Sally-Ben storyline could have a stronger focus and Phyllis could be played as a supporting role.
Either way if FOLLIES were to transfer at all, Murphy would indeed be considered leading...and would kick some ass come Tony night re: Tony Awards '08: LuPone vs. Murphy

I have not seen Ms. LuPone in Gypsy yet, but if Follies should transfer (and if I were a Tony voter), Murphy wouldn't even get my vote. Victoria Clark would.

Okay, I'm not going to read this thread. I'm just posting to say, it better be a joke! You cannot possibly be starting Tony sh*t in July.

Okay, I've been pm'ed that this thread was indeed meant as a joke.

And americanboy, I heartily disagree. I believe that if this GYPSY had been a full production this past year, Ebersole would have not had a chance in East Hampton.

If they were even going up against eachother, I would say Patti would come out on top, no questions asked.

^ Americanboy. London loves Patti...keep that in mind. She already has an Oliver.

I haven't seen Patti yet, but I also heartily disagree.

If it happens, my bets are on Ebersole.

And do remember. While Edith/Little Edie are amazing roles for one actress. Mama Rose is considered the greatest female role of all time. She takes the cake, Mama.

americanboy, get back to us after you've seen GYPSY.

re: Tony Awards '08: LuPone vs. Murphy

I won't see it any time soon.

BUT...

Merman didn't win a Tony for GYPSY.

Remember that.

re: Tony Awards '08: LuPone vs. Murphy

So? That's irrelevent.

In Patti vs. Ebersole world, Patti comes out on top. See her performance before you try and cheapen it.

re: Tony Awards '08: LuPone vs. Murphy

What does that have to do with LuPone/Ebersole? I've seen both performances - Ebersole twice - and I don't think she would have been competition for LuPone here.

THIS is what legendary performances are made of.

^ American. HUH??

That means absolutely NOTHING.

Angela Lansbury and Tyne Daly DID win a Tony for GYPSY.

re: Tony Awards '08: LuPone vs. Murphy

Well, someone said it's the greatest female role ever.

And who would you say (aside from Lupone) the best Mama Rose?

Most would say Merman.

I'm not cheapening her performance. I am sure she is fabulous beyond words.

But Ebersole... wow. I don't know.

My opinion.

re: Tony Awards '08: LuPone vs. Murphy

I can't even wrap my head around how awesome just the idea of both of those shows transferring is.

And it would be ALL Patti. re: Tony Awards '08: LuPone vs. Murphy

re: Tony Awards '08: LuPone vs. Murphy

Patti vs. Donna... oy... that would have to be just....Donna.

Christine vs. Patti - Patti. Pattipattipatti.
SondheimGeek: Is it slightly pathetic that you guys get to be Jedi bitches, and I'm Bitchy the Hutt?
LizzieCurry: No, you're more memorable

re: Tony Awards '08: LuPone vs. Murphy

I didn't see Merman, so I can't judge.

And you haven't seen LuPone...

So, SondheimGeek, you're saying Murphy would have beat Ebersole?

Now, THAT I highly disagree with!
