Tony Awards Internationally
Tony Awards Internationally#1
Posted: 5/1/09 at 2:25amI am wondering if the Tony's are as big internationally as say the Oscars, ie are the telecast overseas?

Posted: 5/1/09 at 2:29amUnless you are a close follower of Musical theatre, you wouldn't even know of the existence in the UK, no coverage or even a mention of them on any news channel!

Posted: 5/1/09 at 4:05ami wish they'd have them in the uk for west end awards. Maybe the Freddy awards
re: Tony Awards Internationally#3
Posted: 5/1/09 at 4:53amI don't think it's in Australia either. In fact, the Tony Award broadcast appears to be so unpopular it doesn't even appear to make torrent sites for download.

Posted: 5/1/09 at 7:32amIn Australia they're broadcast of Foxtel (pay TV) on Ovation. Its normally on twice (live and again at primetime). Sadly they're not broadcast at all in the UK.

Zero coverage.
Lucky to see a mention even when a British gets an award.
Mind you, the same goes for British awards, they get no coverage even in Britain!

Posted: 5/1/09 at 7:48amYou mean they don't even air the Oliviers in England?

Nope!
I'm sure that if you asked the British public they would know what a Tony Award was before an Olivier!

Posted: 5/1/09 at 9:52amAs boyfromoz2 mentioned in Australia they are on cable tv, firstly live on Monday morning, then replayed later that evening and several times over the next couple of weeks. There maybe mention of winners in the nightly news - but only if there is Australian involvement, likely this year if Geoffrey Rush wins anything. There will be a summary of winners in the daily press.

Well, they do turn up in the UK news, but with a hilarious spin on things. Liiike... 2006? Never mind Jersey Boys, never mind The Drowsy Chaperone, BALLS to the Sweeney Todd revival - in 2006, there was ONLY The History Boys on Broadway. And last year? Eh, don't really know anything about most of those musicals, OH LOOK SOUTH PACIFIC! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7456279.stm See? XD
No telecast in the UK, unfortunately. There are programmes for computers that theoretically allow you to watch them streamed online, but the one I used in 2007 didn't work very well in 2008. The Tony website did livestream most of the rehearsals though, on the bit they use for broadcasting the red carpet and the technical awards, so that was nice. :)

But not on a scale such to which the Tony's are presented at the huge Radio City and broadcast live nationwide.
The Olivier's take place in a hotel ballroom with no access to the public.

Posted: 5/1/09 at 9:14pmI wasn't aware about Ovation, I'll need to try and find someone who has the channel :P.
re: Tony Awards Internationally#13
Posted: 5/1/09 at 10:18pmThis has nothing to do with the thread! The idea is to make your own single "MGC Interviews/P.S. What Do You Think About My Boy George Halloween Costume" thread instead of either making a new one or posting in completely unrelated threads.

what does that interview have to do with this thread?
I'm confused..
re: Tony Awards Internationally#15
Posted: 5/1/09 at 11:00pmThe Tony's in Australia are shown on the BIO Channel, not Ovation. In years past ABC would show them every year on the Saturday afternoon following the awards.

In South America, FILMS & ARTS channel (cable)will brodcast it live.
In Brazil, as well as in Argentina, in the Arts supplements of major
newspapers the TONYs have full coverage.Last year a Brazilian actor won the Tony for Best Actor in a musical. This year a girl from Argentina will get the Tony (WSS),I guess.

It's true, they would air on cable in Argentina and it would at least be mentioned in the entertainment issue of the newspaper.
Also some news channels would air some parts, if a recognizable star like Glenn Close, Nicole Kidman, or Brooke Shields appears at the ceremony, or a bit of the musical that takes the Tony for best musical.
But funny enough, it seems nobody watches it in this country! I don't hear anyone saying "Im watching the Tonys tonight" but me.
