Tony Awards musical numbers?

Has there been any announcement of the musical numbers that will be included in this year's telecast of the Tony Awards? Hope they will be all-inclusive as they were last year. Even though 9 to 5 did not make the cut for Best Musical, I still want to see it on the show. Getting to see the [tos] cast on the Tony's would be a total riot.

They don't announce, typically. Here's how I think it should and will go down:

Shrek the Musical
SHOULD: "What's Up, Duloc" into "Who I'd Be"
WILL: "Freak Flag"

Billy Elliot the Musical
SHOULD: "Solidarity" into "Electricity"
WILL: That same old "Electricity" routine they do EVERYWHERE

Rock of Ages
WILL/SHOULD: "Here I Go Again on My Own"

Next to Normal
SHOULD: "Just Another Day"
WILL: Medley

___________________________

West Side Story
SHOULD: "Quintet"
WILL: Medley

Hair
WILL/SHOULD: "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In"

Guys and Dolls
WILL/SHOULD: "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat"

Piragua-Totally agree with you on ALL of these. But here's the question with Shrek- how will Brian d'Arcy James perform? It takes 1-2 hours to apply all that makeup... WILL he perform?

And I know they'd never do it, but Expressing Yourself from Billy Elliot would be fun.

You're Billy Elliot 'should' is mine too - and it just might happen. I understand that the ballet girls WILL be on the show that night. (I hope that doesn't mean "Shine")

Ugh, that Quintet is SO dull! I'd much prefer them do a medley from WSS. Actually, I'd pray for the opening number, but I know that's too much to ask...

How is the Quintet dull? It's quite the opposite.

I really think that BE will do something different to feature all of the nominees. I posted this in another thread, but I hope that they do something like this. I know it would be hard though since there are not enough ballet girls.

It sounds wonderful, but the staging in the revival is static.

KirbyCat ~ That may be why they opt for "Freak Flag". Shrek is not in that number.

Could the Shrek number be very early on, letting Brian perform and then some time to get out of make-up? I'd love to hear Who I'd Be...

I hope BE does a medley or Solidarity. While a fine showcase of the Billys' dance talent, I am a bit sick of seeing them only perform Electricity.

But shouldn't he be in a number? It would be a total waste to not somehow use Brian.
And even when they performed on The View, they brought all the principals into Freak Flag. (with the exception of Farquaad.)

(And even if he was to do the song early on, what about the red carpet?) Updated On: 5/14/09 at 03:45 PM

I would imagine Brian d'Arcy James would wear his makeup to the Tonys [and most likely skip the red carpet] and, like jennamajig said, Shrek would perform earlier in the telecast.

It seems weird "Shrek the Musical" would perform without Shrek himself but I'd understand why if that did happen.

That could very possibly be the solution, but even still, I'd be rather upset if I were him and I had to skip the red carpet!

now that I think about it, maybe he'll do the red carpet as Shrek.

Oh GOD I hope that doesn't happen. I mean, it would be a great publicity stunt and I'm a fan of the show and all (yeah I know...), but that would be just awful!

He skips the red carpet and Shrek performs first. Let's say that happens about 15 minutes into a 3 hour show...if they do Actor as one of the last categories, he could easily be in his seat and winking at the camera by the time the Broadway community sighs as three boys who are great dancers for their age but not actors or singers win a competitive Tony award.

Haha yeah, that's probably how it will all go, but I'm hoping those boys do not get the award... I may be in the minority, but I think Brian deserves the statue.

Funny story- when Shrek was still in previews, I was walking by the Broadway theater (near the end of the 2nd act). This is the part where Shrek runs down the isle in objection to the wedding. What is funny (and somewhat odd) is that there is no way that he can get to the isles in the house without going out through the stage door and into the theater through the public entrances. Well, here he comes, running outas I walk right on by, and he is still walking like an ogre! He's that much in character that he's still walking like he's had an atomic wedgie from 3rd grade. (And that is one of my reasons I'm pulling for him to take home the gold... Or silver, i guess) Updated On: 5/14/09 at 04:03 PM

I preduct that there will be a pre-taped Shrek intro with Brian in costume introducing What's Up Duloc (I also seriously hope they let Chris do the "Defying Gravity" ending on it)

jonartdesigns, that's a good prediction. Or maybe "Freak Flag" instead, considering "What's Up Duloc" was already done on Regis and Kelly recently.

little sally- I was thinking freak flag, however I feel that they'll feature Seiber whereas he has a good shot at winning.
