A few things:
1. The Tonys are indeed on the SECOND Sunday on June this year. They are normally on the first Sunday in June, but not this year because of scheduling conflicts.
2. The tickets for the general public go on sale on Ticketmaster the morning of the nominations announcement, May 16. There are special ways of getting tickets beforehand, yes, but you have to be an insider to get them.
3. The ushers at RCMH on Tony night are instructed not to let in people who aren't appropriately dressed. If your black suit can pass for a tux, you are probably fine.
4. Yes, it's a long night. You should probably stay home.

Posted: 4/18/06 at 5:49pmThat explains why they are on the 11th. I will be appropriately dressed. I am not getting my tickets through ticket master. And this is my vacation and a gift from a friend. I am flying in from Denver. I have always wanted to attend the Tonys, so I really don't care how long the night may be. Unless something stops me from going. I will be there! I will say, that through my connection, we got our order in late so we are just a wee bit nervous. Will know in a few days.

I went the year of WICKED and AVENUE Q.
It was really exciting - the commercial breaks are the best part of the evening.
I skipped last year beacuse I didn't really like what was nominated, overall.
I love this season, so I may go.
I think a tux is required. Black-tie is required. They can deny admission, I believe.

I went last year, my first time to see the TONYs live.
*Attire -- black tie required, but I saw a few men in dark suits and regular tie...most ladies wore evening gowns but there were a few in short very dressy cocktail dress.
*It will take about 5 hours of your time --
-About an hour wait on the queue before they let people in
-About an hour for the non-televised portion of the awards ceremony ( technical awards, etc)
-Three hours of the televised portion.
*Ticket source - getting tickets on the day they are available ( day nominations are announced) is very, very difficult and almost impossible ( think worse than Three Days of Rain and Odd Couple pre-sales because there is only one event available to like-minded thousands of theatre fans
)...I got mine through a ticket broker ( no choice, as I was flying from Asia partly to see the TONY show). We had seats on the 3rd row of First/front mezzanine Center - still quite a ways from the stage, but at least we weren't looking down at the stage from way up.
*How is it different from the telecast?
There is a greater feeling of community inside RCMH. Everyone seems to be cheering for each and every nominee - as if this is really more of a celebration of the season and of the theatre...rather than one of fierce competition. I loved that feeling!
The show seems a little disjointed during commercial breaks ( that's when they rearrange the stage and the props
. But that time was very enjoyable, too. They put on other things not for the regular audience to see and Hugh Jackman was very good in these impromptu moments. He even sang RIO because the audience shouted for it...and let some seat-fillers take the stage
*Would I want to see it again --
Yes, but not sure if I would go this year ( maybe, if Hugh hosts again...otherwise I am not that excited about this year's competing shows...too bad that Woman in White may not be part of the excitement as that would have been the major reason for me to attend) or maybe next year if next year's lineup of shows looks very promising.

Posted: 4/18/06 at 9:24pmNo black tie required. If you are in the mezzanine you don't even need a suit.

Posted: 4/19/06 at 10:53amThat's what I was told. I think we are actually in the balcony so I may or may not do a suit. Although I will have one.
