dreaming - what I meant to imply is that I think Gentlemen is a huge underdog to win the best scenery Tony. If it wins that won, then it will indicate to me that the show has huge support and will win Best Musical. Once's set is nothing award worthy in my opinion, yet it went along with the ride in Once's wins.
I get what you're saying, broadfan (even if I do love the Once set) but I think if Gentleman's Guide wins score, it's a better indicator than set.

I could see that if the voters want to "split the baby,", they could give Gentlemen book and score and give Beautiful Best Musical. Then both shows would be able to advertise that they won major awards.
Edit - I don't think it needs the scenic award to win Best Musical, but if it did win it, it should have no problem winning Best Musical.

"Straight plays are a different story, we're talking MUSICALS. I think the last time that happened was Andrea Martin winning Best Featured Actress in 1993 for My Favorite Year."
True, but O'Hara has a shot. Some people who are not happy about Bridges closing may even be more likely to vote for her. Anything can happen.

This year actually reminds me a lot of the Drowsy / Jersey season, where Drowsy Chaperone (a funny charming show which was sort of a musical within a musical) took home Book and Score and Featured Actress while Jersey Boys (a jukebox musical featuring pop hits from the past) won Musical and Lead Actor.....now we have Gentleman's Guide (another funny charming show which is sort of a musical within a musical (i.e. the smaller stage onstage)) against Beautiful (another jukebox musical featuring pop hits from the past)....I could easily see this same split happening this season with Beautiful taking Musical and Lead Actress and Gentleman's taking Book, Score and Featured Actress.....
^Don't forget that both Jersey Boys & Beautiful also have books by first-time playwrights who've collaborated with Woody Allen (Marshall Brickmann/Douglas McGrath). Updated On: 2/25/15 at 06:27 PM
Hedwig was great, dint see all the shows but if any surpassed that, then we have little to complain about. Wow, I would go several times even though I'm a poor fella, if I lived near NYC.
It's hard for me to see Beautiful as original and Hedwig as a revival. Even though..... I loved Beautiful but if Gentleman's is as good as some of you say then it should win.

To me, the key difference is that Jersey Boys received across-the-board raves and was far and away the most highly critically praised show of the season (probably the most universally praised show in a long time). There really was no question that it would win Best Musical.

It's not a question of Beautiful being "original", but that it is new. Hedwig and Violet are old enough to be categorized as "classic" which puts them in the revival category. It may not be accurate to categorize them as revivals, or even fair, but that's just the way it is.
