Do they announce the winner at the Tony Dress Rehearsal? Like who's going to win the award tonight?
Do they announce a fake winner or what? I'm curious about how that works at the dress rehearsal.
According to the live blog, they pick a random winner from the actual nominees. Michael Cerveris fake-won best actor in a musical. Chita fake-won best actress.

They announce all the nominees and then the envelope says "for dress rehearsal purposes only, the winner is Xx". And then one of the maybe 10 stand-ins go up and give a little speech. They need to do all that so the cameras, timing, etc go on sync. They only had to stop a couple of times throughout the show for re-dos. Otherwise it went very smoothly.

I don't like this fake-winner thing, if I was nominated, that would freak me out.

It's not so bad really. They are totally random selections...and frankly, you get a chance to clap and hear applause for your show, even if you don't ultimately win.
I noticed at one point Something Rotten was selected for a fake win of something...and the cast was in the audience waiting to perform.. and they got all excited.. I imagine it's fun to even "fake win".

Besides, some of the "fake" acceptance speeches were brilliant.
Do tell!
