Hey Gaveston, what was seeing Dorothy's version of that song like on stage? I heard from many people who saw the original say it was something out of this world.
The Tonys have a long tradition of rewarding frivolous, light-weight pieces of theatre instead of more artistically accomplished, 'deeper' shows.
Take for example, Memphis/Fela!, Spamalot/Light in the Piazza, Avenue Q/Caroline or Change, Thoroughly Modern Millie/Urinetown, Crazy for You/Falsettos, The Will Rogers Follies/Miss Saigon, La Cage Aux Folles/Sunday in the Park with George, Two Gentlemen of Verona/Follies,
I would compare this year's race to The Will Rogers Follies and Miss Saigon. The toe-tapping American spectacle and the backlashed British-import. Of course the main difference is that this years winner is at least a watchable show.
