I just got the Color Purple Cast Recording and I love it. It got me thinking...how do they pick best score? Its hard to compare a comedic score to a more dramatic score. Like comparing Dirty Rotten to Piazza or Avenue Q to Caroline or Change. Some people underestimate a good comedic score because they're laughing. Just wonder what you're thoughts were. I was thinking about how I loved Wedding Singer's score, but then I got Color Purple and now I sort of think it should win. Though they're both great scores, just two different spectrums.

Best Original Score Nominees (You Heard it Here First)
The Color Purple
The Wedding Singer
The Drowsy Chaperone
The Woman in White
the only other original musical scores this season, In My Life and Lestat, will be forgotten.

I'm pretty sure there are normally four nominee's in the best score category.
Excuse me if I am incorrect.

Yeah, but what should win and how would you consider it? Drowsy and Woman in White couldn't be further from each other.

I think Drowsy has the best chance this year. The score is the most consistent. I couldn't find one bad song.

I've only heard Wedding Singer & Purple. And they couldn't be farther from each other, in terms of style.

I love the score of Woman In White. It is rich, melodious, romantic, moving, and strong.

Really? All I've heard about Drowsy is that the score is the weak link. But I like it from the little I've heard.

I saw The Wedding Singer last week (still in previews) and i decided to write a review of it, just because i feel like it.
When I first got to the show, and sat down in my seats, I couldnt help my smile. The disco ball, the cool curtian, and than the music started to play. Fun music that you can't help but enjoy.
When I look at peoples posts and they say "to bland, not interesting" I can only help by ask: Were they seeing the same show as me? The show itself is not an original concept, but it's fun. Broadway needs a fun, good-hearted show.
Yes maybe HAIRSPRAY did the 'same-ish' thing, but these are two completely different shows.
Lynch happends to be one of my favorite comedians, so i was excited to see him from the beggining. He was great, but he was different than Sandler's charecter in the movie. In the movie Robbie was more of a nerdy out-cast guy, but in the show he's more "normal" (for lack of a better word) Not necesarilly a bad thing, but just different.
As for the "bad casting" ... i think that's 101% wrong ... I couldnt think of a different cast that would be better.
Question is: Are you going to see a show to have a good time? I did, i had a good time, and i'll be the biggest advocate for it.
As for price: Folk's broadway is no movie theater .. it's expensive.
And for the people who came down on the show because it's too BLAND, go away! K? K.
And for the people who havent seen the show but chose to come down on it, go see it and than talk to me.
Drowsy's score is it's weakness. There are only one or two memorable numbers/songs, and its because of the performances in my opinion, not the songs.
As much as I hate Andrew Lloyd Weber, he deserves to walk away with the award this year.
Re: your wedding singer review, i agree completely, I saw it saturday and it was the most fun i've had in a theatre in a long time! The best energy from the cast and great leads. Go see it for a great time and talent!
Oh please don't give Lloyd Webber any more ideas by giving him the Tony. I'm so sick of his medicore crap.
If The Wedding Singer score gets a nom
I will take pills
If it wins I will take more
(just being a smartass)
Not a great year for this category
Too Bad "Grey Gardens" is still Off B'Way
I think "Drowsy" is the best score so far.
it's a lot of fun.
actually the orchestrations for "Sweeney" make it sound like a "new" score.
Woman in White is simply breathtaking. Drowsy is fun, but WIW is more deep and intriguing.
^Ditto!
In my ideal world, Woman in White will win best score.
And Maria and Michael will both be nominated for awards, at least!
In my ideal world, WiW will get a nominaton for best musical- And win! Although there's a zero to none chance of that happening. At least let it win best score, or an acting award for Maria Friedman.
Ah, if only the TONY'S were controlled by me...
Best Score is probably going to look like this:
THE COLOR PURPLE
THE DROWSY CHAPERONE
TARZAN
THE WOMAN IN WHITE
The only other alternative really would be for THE WEDDING SINGER to be nominated over THE WOMAN IN WHITE.
Remember, the Tonys are all about business. WOMAN IN WHITE is a closed show. They have nothing to promote or gain from winning a Best Score Tony. All in all, there is not one oustanding score that stands above the rest this year (i.e. THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA), but it's probably going to be between DROWSY and COLOR.
Part of me is expecting DROWSY to win Best Book and Score with COLOR or TARZAN taking home the Best Musical prize (similar to RAGTIME and THE LION KING, or MILLIE and URINETOWN)

If Tarzan or Lestat get nominated, I will lose all respect for the theater.
LESTAT should not get a nomination, and as said above, if TARZAN receives a best score nomination, well, I think I may just kill myself.
The best score nominees as posted above (by Yank) seem spot on, although I would recommend the THREE DAYS OF RAIN score over THE WEDDING SINGER or DROWSY CHAPERONE, a la Tsori's TWELFTH NIGHT, etc.
The race is obviously between THE WOMAN AND WHITE and THE COLOR PURPLE, but since THE COLOR PURPLE won't win any other major award, THE COLOR PURPLE will win.
No matter what wins best score this year, the award is a joke. Not one of the scores is worthy of any sort of awards. It will be a shame to see brilliant Tony winning scores now with the likes of something like THE COLOR PURPLE.
Oh, well.

Act One of The Wedding Singer was really bad. I left during the intermission. I can't see the comparison between The Wedding Singer and Hairspray. Hairspray at least had some real comedy with Harvey Feirstein. The Wedding Singer will undoubtedly be nominated for Best Score but I can't imagine it winning anything. Nothing. Zilch.

Best Score is probably the only catagory that a closed show on occassion wins.
