I kinda go with the fact that although Bernadette was BRILLIANT in the role. Everyone has seen Gypsy, Hairspray was something brand spanking new and everyone connected with it just part of that avalanche of a New SMASH HIT MUSICAL that it just took the Tonys. Im sure that everyone involved in the Tony's felt it was justified. Im sure Bernadette hasnt given it a second thought since 2003. So I dont think we should either. Im sure the feeling is anyone involved in a hit show is a winner with or without a Tony.
It actually did a lot better business than I remember. It might just be that I really don't care as this argument should have died, oh I don't know, three years ago. I remember it having some lean weeks and there being lots of offers around and a closing notice being posted for Feb 20th and then it being rescinded but only for a few months.
Do we really know Bernadette hasn't given it a thought since then? Hmmmm.....Quite possibly she has been fantasizing up until this very day ways in which she could exact revenge on Marissa. Then she saw the career choices Ms Winkour has made ans took a sigh of relief.
However, I imagine the kind and generous Bernadette realized on Tony Night 2003 that Marissa and her have the same unruly hair and took pity as Marissa breezed by her to pick up the Tony. She then buried the hatchet and in the immortal words of Stephen Sondheim, "Moved On."
Munk--If you can't add up the publicity generated, the word-of-mouth, reviews, "buzz," momentum, TV coverage, predictions, articles, P.R., etc. and figure out what "someone's year" means, you don't have a handle on how this business works.
Ben Brantly gave a huge rave for Peters' Rose.
And yes, Peters should win that year. Hairspray is a terribly mediocre show and should win nothing, not only best actress.

but it all comes back down to the Legend vs. Semi-Celeb
That's the problem. Because people regard Bernadette as a "legend" then they feel everything she does is tony worthy. I think it's the same kind of thing with Pattie Lupone. Bernadette steps on a stage and people scream tony and don't always look at whether or not an award for that particular performance is deserved (above someone elses.) Not saying she did or didn't deserve it, but I just see some blind adoration for some of the "legends" that sometimes lacks objectivity.
Marissa was adorable and funny, but I thought that Peters just towered over the competition. However, it wasn't a surprise that Winokur won. Didn't she get all of the precursors?
BUT, I was shocked when Fierstein (as brilliant as he is) won over Banderas.
AMPAS? That's the perfect example of an award that's all about politics and money. i am rarely in agreement with those people.
"If Bernadette had played Velma Von Tussle instead of Rose, she would have won."
That's some nice casting ideas.
I hear ya, PCBoy. When I saw this thread, I though "Not again?". I was just a big fan of the production and Bernadette's performance and it seems because of the controversy surrounding the production and the Tony "upset" that a lot of misconceptions and distortions of the truth have occurred. So I just like to keep the facts straight.
One of the main reasons Bernadette didn't win was apparently that she missed a lot of the performances (yes, due to illness,, but still) and the "events" that the Tony voters go to.
similar issues happened with Donna Murphy in 2004. People predicted that both Kristin and Idina would be cancelled out by each other and Donna would win, but she too missed a lot of performances and events.
Because Gypsy opened so close to the Tony deadline, yes Bernadette had missed several performances in the month right before the Tony eligiblity deadline (during previews). But it was from one illness and only amounted to about 8 or nine performances. Other than a one week schedule vacation and two other days off, she didn't miss any other performances during the 14 month run of the production. So comparing her to Donna Murphy's constant absences throughout her run (including not being in at all for the last several weeks of her contract) is not really fair. Gypsy really did open in a pressure cooker (more so than the usual Broadway pressure cooker) environment which I think definitely led to its PR problems. Also adding to its difficulties is that Sam Mendes is obviously a director who likes to work a lot on the show during previews. So anyone who went to the previews saw a real work in progress but often expected it to be a complete production. Because this time was immediately before Tony nominations, the bad buzz started early. I think if Gypsy had done even a short out of town tryout, its run would have been much more successful.

People are still complaining about Grace Kelly winning the Oscar over Judy Garland and that was over 50 years ago, so don't expect the Winokur/Peters controversy to go away anytime soon.
Jumping into the middle of these kinds of popular fans' arguments and telling everyone to shut up and go home is basically indulging in the most futile variety of control freakdom. The disputes aren't going anywhere. They'll periodically reemerge because people feel strongly and enjoy the rehashing process. And really, 99% of what's posted here is a rehash of something anyway, so what's the difference?

Changing the topic a little bit... I still don't understand that. I thought Grace Kelly was excellent in The Country Girl.
I think it was a shock to Peters, I love the look on her face when they announce Winoker as the winner - it's priceless! lol How she tries to regain composure when her name ISN'T announced - hilarious!
Too bad Marissa can't get work.... whoops did i say that.....
It was and is Bernadette's award in my eyes.... Same for Brian Stokes Mitchell too.
I wouldn't be suprised if Sutton sneaks in and grabs the award from Lupone or Lachanze. Not that it would be a bad thing because all three are giving awsome performances respectivally.
Sorry, I didn't realize this was such a heated discussion. I personally was not a big Broadway fan up until a few years ago, so I missed this whole controversy.
I was curious as to if it was a huge upset or not.

Perhaps she hasn't done much theater, but she's been working steadily. I looked her up on IMDB and aside from STACKED, she's been quite busy.....
I always assumed Bernadette wasn't given the Tony (for GYPSY) because she had recently won four years earlier (for ANNIE GET YOUR GUN). Maybe they thought they'd give it to someone else, someone new. That's how the Oscars work. Look at Meryl Streep who should have a collection of Oscars by now.
