whoever does it, PLEASE don't let them go on and on telling endless jokes that have nothing to do with the awards. the TONYS is the only GOOD award show left. please, let's not turn it into the four-hour fiasco that the OSCAR ceremony has become.

Except pab, Avenue Q opened last season, making this a different case than, say, the Producers-fest of a few years ago.

And cturtle, doesn't hiring Billy Crystal scream "we're trying to be like the Oscars" to you?

yes, PLUM, it does! that's why i'd rather not see BILLY do it. i'm not berating his talent, but i DON'T want to see him leaping around the radio city stage singing/shouting "TOE-KNEE TOE-KNEE! TOE-KNEE TOE-KNEEEEEE!"

I really don't think it should matter when a show opened if the hosts are from that show. It's all about having good hosts and drawing a television audience to the Tony's which is a show that is always at the bottom of the ratings.

besides .. theres no written rule if people from a show host, that the show has to be from the current season. It would be kinda of fitting for ppl from Avenue Q to host. It would be like the winners from last year introducing this years winners

Reading what MargoChanning said, I would like to see Billy Crystal host the Tonys.

Hugh Jackman (even though we already said this is likely not to happen)
Bernadette Peters
Harvey Fierstein
Brooke Shields (?)
Nathan Lane/Matthew Broderick (together)

Actually now that you mention it, I would LOVE to see Brooke Shields do it. There's no way I can listen to Harvey tell bad jokes for 3 hours, or watch Hugh gloat in his own beauty again, or even watch Matthew and Nathan act like jackasses. Brooke might not be the best choice to bring in ratings, but no more or less than Hugh, etc. Someone mentioned the "Q" gang do it with their puppets - I think that would be the single most irritating event of my life. Speaking of shows with people hosting in character, I would absolutely LOVE to see the tonys hosted by Little Sally and Officer Lockstock - how marvelous would it be if they hosted the Tonys even though their show closed over a year ago? Plus, they're ALWAYS funny. But again, ratings...

Bruce Vilanch did the Hosting for the "Gypsy Of The Year" show, but since he writes the Tony show, and is backstage changing lines as people go on and off, maybe that would not work?! Maybe Whoopi and Billy, a dynamic duo! Great way to turn people on to Broadway who have not been at all, or get them excited to come back? Just a thought

As much as I'd like to see Billy host, it'd give the illusion that the Tonys are trying to be the Oscars.

However, I kind of like starlight's idea of Billy and Whoopi.

I love the Billy and Whoopi idea, too. They hosted Comic Relief together (with Robin Williams) for many years, are friends and have great chemistry together (by the way, Robin Williams did his last HBO Special from Broadway, and did an acclaimed production of "Waiting For Godot" at Lincoln Center back in the 80s with Steve Martin, Bill Irwin, and F. Murray Abraham, directed by Mike Nichols, so he has stage cred if he wanted to join them -- just not too much .... a little Robin Williams goes a LONG way IMO).

I agree Margo! And why wasn't Robin able to be nominated for a Tony the year he did his Broadway gig? Was the Special Event Tony not present yet, or did he not meet some criteria? Oh, I'll bet he wasn't on Broadway long enough for all the critics to show. Nevermind, I answered my own question.

i dunno. . .in theory the multiple host thing sounds cool, but i think they tried that one year w/ the emmys and it kind of backlashed on the network

I think they should have Harvey Fierstein & Elaine Stritch co-host.

Whoever hosts, they better have a memorium for Jerry Orbach.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Elaine Stritch would be classic - she'd be bombed the entire broadcast.

What about a Lindsay Lohan/Tara Reid/Paris Hilton/Ashlee Simpson/Avril Lavigne co-hosting? That would be brilliat...

Nah, she's laid off the sauce. But during the rehearsals she would be screaming "Where's my insulin. I need my insulin now". (Oh sorry, that was a bad flashback).

The Tonys used have a dozen hosts during some years in the 80s (the Susan Anton years, I call them) Terrible shows. Two or three is fine. More than that (plus the dozens of presenters) and it all looks messy.

There was one year (I think in the 1990's) where they didn't have a host. And then there's the "In the mind of Bonnie Franklin" year. Talk about stupid.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
