Wouldn't it be more resourceful, and less repetitive, if we ask each new member to list their top ten favorite musical scores when they sign up?

That way it can be posted in a profile, and anyone can see what musicals particulary move us. Maybe we can even create a "favorites" page, a la the fan photos for our Top Ten Lists. (Shows, performers, etc.)

Also it eliminates the need to have the same thread, created every week or so, albeit worded differently, and answered by the same posters.

Just a suggestion to break the seemingly never-ending repetive nature of the threads.

Since most top 10's around here include the same 5 musicals from the last 10 years, I thought it would be more interesting to limit the time period.

I love you for mentioning LI'L ABNER! I simply adore that show! I've been dying to play Abner for years! Well, especially since I can't get cast as Daisy Mae! re: Best 10 Musicals between 1900-1980 I'd love for this show to come back to Broadway!

We're talking BEST SCORES here - meaning the quality of the music - not the book or performances, or sets, or anything else...

I'm limiting myself to American composers only.

Roughly chronological:

SHOWBOAT
GIRL CRAZY
BABES IN ARMS
CAROUSEL
CANDIDE
THE MOST HAPPY FELLA
GYPSY
WEST SIDE STORY
SHE LOVES ME
SWEENEY TODD

Based on scores that yielded the greatest numbers of Hit songs and/or standards...
SHOW BOAT (1927) -
GIRL CRAZY (1930)
ANYTHING GOES (1934)
BABES IN ARMS (1937)
OKLAHOMA! (1943)
ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (1946)
MY FAIR LADY (1956)
WEST SIDE STORY (1957)
GYPSY (1959)
SOUND OF MUSIC (1959)

Notice that after 1960 most shows if they had any hit songs it was usually one per score, once in a while maybe 2. Most of the above the entire score became popular.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
