re: Top 5 Coolest Effects#34
Posted: 4/6/05 at 7:36pmI agree with most of these. I also thought of one that isn't so much an "amazing" effect, but is definitely one of the most fun effects that I've seen: The bus/bicycle in All Shook Up. I know people knock it for being a Juke Box musical, but it really makes for a nice, fun, enjoyable evening, and I was smiling for the ENTIRE show!

Shakalaka Baby - Fountain in Bombay Dreams
Helicopter in Miss Saigon
Chandelier in Phantom
and I'd ditto most of the other mentioned as well. But, the fountain definitely tops the cake!

Posted: 4/6/05 at 10:17pmOkay so the witch transformation is done with a body double badly lip syncing to Vanessa Williams' voice..... Vanessa is behind a black sheet center stage wearign the cloak the ugly which goes behind the cloth Vanessa comes out coverd in the cloak stands on a little platform that hoist up out of the floor and rotates....then she throws the cloak off and then you have Vanessa Williams as the witch

I can't say JUST 5, so:
Beauty and the Beast (Transformation)
The Lion King (He Lives In You and Drying of the Lands)
Thoroughly Modern Millie (New modern at the end of the show)
GYPSY (the "footlights" that pop up out of the stage when June is performing)
Les Miz (The Baracade)
AMADEUS (The use of scrims)
42nd Street (THE STAIRS!!! AHHH I LOVED IT!)
1776 (the declaration scrim)
Peter Pan (audience flight)
GYPSY (when the bright light F*ckin BLINDS the audience right before tammy did Let Me Entertain you)
Damn it! I can't think of what show this next one is from, but it's probably my favorite of all of them. I saw this show where a girl started singing a song and then a spot came in on just her face (not including hair, LITERALLY just face), and then all the sudden it went BLACK (but the light was still on her face) and when she was done with the song, she had on a new wig, costume, new set was behind her, i mean it was ridiculous! seriously!

no one has mentioned Golda's Balcony and that plane theyre projecting on the back wall- it looked like it was flying at the audience. it freaked ME out!
i think most of my other favorites were already mentioned.

Posted: 4/7/05 at 1:24amI had to laugh when we saw Phantom, and after ALL that pyrotechnic 'stuff', the biggest audience reaction was when Raul jumped into the 'lake' - which was a simple drop through a trap door. I thought that all theatre producers needed to look and learn what mattered!

Posted: 4/7/05 at 1:33amWhy is Defying Gravity here? A good effect makes you wonder how they did it, IMO.

1. The Phantom of the Opera -scene (POTO). It's a fantastic moment when those first burning 'candles' rise from the mist.
2. Defying Gravity (WICKED)- looked so cool.
3. Journey to the heaviside layer (CATS) - as a kid, seeing that car tire rise up for the first time was so amazing.
3. Overture (POTO) - watching that chandelier rise with the thundering overture playing is one of the best openings of a show.
4. Beast's transformation (BEAUTY & THE BEAST)
5. Two quick make-up changes on stage in DRACULA. The show itself was boring as he** but and the flying effects were used maybe a bit too much, but there were these two quick make-up that took place in front of the audience that were stunning!

"The only creative and effective use of projections I've seen was in Jane Eyre and the final moment of Sunset Boulevard. "
MR MATT: what kind of projections did they use (and how did they used them) in SUNSET BOULEVARD? I've never seen the show and I'm curious about the final scene.

"Everything in Phantom"
C'mon people, be specific.
Unmasked - what's with listing five shows? The question was what are the top 5 special effects you have seen, not shows.
Whether you liked the show or not, in SEUSSICAL, the backdrop/vortex effect making it seem like everything was sucked in, then BAM! Lights up! Welcome to the land of Seuss.
