haha, yeah...I tried to show my friend yesterday some Tony Awards performances (including Drowsy's) and she didn't care for any of them except for Wedding Singer's. Well, Wedding Singer's was fun--but I liked the other ones too :-P

How did they do the disappearing Phantom effect? How did he disappear leaving behind his mask?

I'm not 100% sure but, I think that he set's a mask on the chair and while he disappears under a trap door or something. They planned this to be timed with when Meg comes down into the lair so, you are distacted by Meg and don't pay attention to the Phantom.

I never saw AIDA, can someone tell me what this pool is?
There is a pool standing upright on stage in Aida.
It's actually a gauze behind which two actresses are pulled up and down on wires, simulating to swim. With some lightning effects it's quite the fun effect.

There is a picture in "Aida - The Making Of the Broadway Musical" but it's too large to scan, so I took a picture with my digital camera...
It gives you an idea of how the effect works.
In no particular order:
1. The restoration of the theatre during the overture of Phantom.
2. The ascension of Grizabella at the end of Cats.
3. The costume change and scene change for Effie in the middle of "I Am Changing" in Dreamgirls.
4. The final moments of Defying Gravity in Wicked.
5. The stampede in The Lion King.
I'm not sure anyone mentioned it yet, but Defying Gravity...geez.
I would say the whole set and bridges of Starlight Express also (someone else mentioned it already) -- that set really set a high standard for me - it was the second show I saw on Broadway after A Chorus Line.
The other effect that amazed me was (well, when I saw it) Chip Zien's legs in Grand Hotel during We'll Take a Glass. I've seen the Jeter clip and my memory of Zien was about the same - wow!
Also, Jane Krakowski (enough said, but..) being lowered onto the stage in Call From the Vatican in Nine -- the stage flooding in that show was pretty cool too.
In "How To Succeed" with Matthew Broderick, a worker is sitting at a desk, the lights go out and a spotlight shines on a ringing phone. In a matter of seconds, the lights return and Matthew is at the desk answering the phone. It was amazing because the audience did not see or hear a thing!
And what's the secret behind the beast transformation? Another actor in the beast costume during the transformation (a la the witch transformation in "Into The Woods") while the real beast has already changed his costume into the prince and just has to reappear?

1. Phantom-everything
2. Lestat-the pit of fire (the first time, from orchestra)
3. Little Shop of Horrors-Audrey II
4. Lion King-stampede
5. Spamalot- any God sequence
Ones I have personally seen...
1) Chitty flying car....amazing, only word for it.
2) Javet's suicide...simple yet so effective
3) Circle of Life... so beautiful it reduced me to tears
4) Masquerade...the dummies so good.
5) Balcony in Evita...saw it on Saturday, so simple but so good.

I think that they put the costume in the top of the umbrella during SHOW OFF.
When I saw it, I thought I saw some yellow cloth at the top of the umbrella....I don't know.

All of the above are pretty cool in very different ways. Love the effects in Mary Poppins, Bert walking on the proscenium, Mary, the house, it's great. However, I don't suppose anyone here saw Scrooge in the Palladium at Christmas, did you? Well, Tommy Steele (71 and still absoloutely amazing) was in it and the effects were low budget and yet superb. The scene where the ghost of Jacob Marley comes to tell him that he will be visited by three spirits and all that is just wonderful.

If you watch the Tony Clip closely and pay careful attention to the top of the umbrella you will see a slot, and that is where they put the dress, and the second dress she has underneath. So they (the people standing behind her) rip of the yellow one, which I am pretty sure is Velcro or some other easy to take off material, and then put it in the umbrella.
