Toronto gets Jason Robert Brown's PARADE

Mitchell Marcus advises me that his show for next season will be PARADE...

After a sold-out run of The Light In The Piazza, Acting Up Stage Company announces the Canadian premiere of another contemporary, thought-provoking musical for its 2010-2011 season, and an exciting co-production.

Acting Up Stage Company and Studio 180 Theatre present
PARADE
Book by Alfred Uhry
Music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown
December 30, 2010 to January 22, 2011 at the Berkeley Street Theatre Upstairs

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

When I heard this a while ago, I was very excited. A great show being produced by a great theatre company. Can't wait!

This has been the worst kept secret in town. So nice to finally be able to celebrate this wonderful casting officially!

I was really anticipating this show, yet the Ooze's review was rough:

http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/theatre/article/915541--theatre-review-parade-sadly-goes-nowhere

I can never decide about Richard. He accolades some shows that've been embarassing, and rips up others that I've really enjoyed.

Speaking of critics, it'd be interesting to know which you like/dislike. I like NOW's Jon Kaplan a lot. Glenn Sumi is good as well, but sometimes he seems bored & disinterested.

In any case, if anyone attends a performance of Parade, can you post your thoughts about it? I'm low on $$$ and would be grateful for your reviews before deciding to buy a ticket...

I really enjoyed this production. I wasn't in love with the overall direction of the show and thought it was rather generic. I think the Toronto Star review made a few good critiques but in general I disagree with it. Go see this production to see the actors alone. Michael Therriault is a very strong actor and he does not disappoint as Leo Frank. It is true that Michael and Tracy (Lucille)lacked vocal strength in some of the numbers but their strong character and acting chops made up for this. Daren A. Herbert stole the show in both parts he played and the ticket price alone is worth seeing his performance. Jeff Irving is also a standout as Young Soldier/Frankie. Gabrielle Jones, Mark Uhre, Sarite Harris, I can go on and on about the number of strong actors in this production and the performances they deliver. I rather enjoyed the set and costume design (A sushi bar? Really Richard Oz?).
Go see this show! The great book and score combined with great actors in an intimate setting...well worth the price of a ticket!

I'll be seeing "Parade" next Tuesday; Acting Up Stage Company and Studio 180 have never disappointed me in the past.

As for theatre critics, after many years of seeing live theatre in this town, I've come to the conclusion that it's all opinion, the difference being the newspaper critics get paid for their opinion and we don't.

There have been times I feel that Rich the Oz gets it right. But as I am oft reminding people, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
I like both these performers( and the show itself) so will def try to make time for this.

I don't always disagree with Mr. O but I think that he got this one wrong. My feeling is that he just doesn't like the show itself and it was going to be near impossible for him to give the production a glowing review. In any case, I truly enjoyed the show and thought that some of the performances were the best I've seen on a Toronto stage in a long time. Michael and Tracy both gave stirring, emotional performances, and Daren, in my opinion, did steal the show. There were a couple of performances that I didn't particularly enjoy but that didn't color my enjoyment of the show as a whole. I think it's an excellent production and at $30-40 a ticket, it would be a shame for anyone to avoid the show because of Richard's review. I've seen it twice and will definitely go back again before the closing.

I couldn't ask for a more intimate setting than The Berkeley Street Theatre, Upstairs. I couldn't ask for a more gifted cast(there are fifteen on stage), and yet this musical never really takes off. Too linear? We know what's going to happen; it just takes a very long time to get there. There isn't the emotional punch one looks for. Don't just sing it; feel it. Make us feel it. Though it's won Tony awards, I think the problems are with the musical itself. The cast is worth more than the price of admission (how does a cast this big, in a theatre this small, break even?) I felt I'd been undercharged; time to make a donation to The Acting Up Stage Companyand Studio 180, who've given me some incredible theatrical moments in the past.

There's any number of shows they could do, and all power to them. I applaud Mitchell Marcus for picking the riskier products. That doesn't mean I have to join the cheerleader squad and love every show he does. Toronto gets Jason Robert Brown's PARADE

Yes, I saw CAROLINE OR CHANGE. I didn't like it. Sorry.

I have to agree with tourboi. Saw it with Tonya Pinkins who was the best part of the show. The show itself is a bore.

If they're going to keep going chamber musical, do A Catered Affair or Grey Gardens at least.
