"The New Normal" - Andrew Rannells
"Go On" - Laura Benanti
Trailers
The New Normal looks really good.
I'm worried about Go On. Laura does not have a great track record with shows, and Lord knows Matthew Perry has not been able to find his footing since Friends.
Ugh you can already hear Ryan Murphy's voice all over those scenes from New Normal--I was hoping since he was a co-creator it wouldn't be quite so... Murphy. I like the cast though and will give it a chance.
Love Benanti, but I really don't have much hope for Go On. Despite a good cast, Perry's show from a couple of years back was so awful, and greeted with such audience apathy that I think the show will have to at least pull up better material than from those brief clips if it wants audiences to give it a chance.
I was really afraid TNN would look terrible, but it actually looks pretty good. Hooray!
The New Normal trailer looks awful! The camera move from the scene at the park is ****ty, it messes up and switches to Justin's face to early and has to come back till Andrew's line is over; how do these errors get by unnoticed?
Also, the writing, from the trailer, seems to have no substance at all. Andrew Rannels, loved him in Book of Mormon, he's one of the greatest Broadway actors in the business, but his acting doesn't transfer well to TV. I'm upset that my expectations were not met with this trailer, I really wanted it to be good. However, I'll wait till the pilot airs to make more or change my opinions.

To be fair, often these trailers don't even use the final edits of the pilots that eventually air, so I wouldn't worry too much about questions of edits and camera shots...yet. I do agree that Rannels, judging solely from the clips, doesn't seem to translate as a TV actor--even the scene where he's sitting beside his boyfriend he's all fidgeting mannerisms...
TNN's tone looks as confusing as Glee's.
The ending was so mawkish and didactic I just rolled my eyes.
God I hope they cut a new trailer and fast.
That's exactly it and what I meant by Murphy's "voice". It seems to suffer more so when he tries to both do his style of humour (which is caricaturish and often, IMHO, verging on mean spirited) mixed with "heartfelt" sentiment which this show, being so heavily promoted as a family show, seems to want to do.
Don't know how I feel about "Go On" or "The New Normal". Both seem tonally...off.
I will say that I normally hate shows like "Chicago Fire" but it looks interesting. And stocked with awesome eye-candy.
I know tv shows are filled with ridiculously attractive people, and I'm not saying I mind, but I kinda had to laugh at the clip chosen for Chicago Fire just because it seemed so blatant on selling it via beefcake. It does have Dick Wolf behind it as EP, though its showrunner/creator's biggest claim to fame seems to be writing 2 Fast 2 Furious...
Did The Playboy Club or whatever it was called get cancelled?
Yes, after, I believe, three episodes...
These preview clips are sterling examples of why I dumped my TV set years ago.

Go On - Trailer
Oof. Those all looked pretty bad.
The New Normal - awful title - isn't bad but it didn't really pull me in. I don't know. Those two as a couple did nothing for me, and it looks like it's going to be overly sentimental.
How dare you judge these shows on "trailers" and clips that are released to judge these shows on.
God knows Missy B deserves a running TV gig before she's playing the mother of a gay teen.
I wondered how that big ole face of Andrew was gonna translate on the small screen.
I'm programmed to dislike Lautner-face because he's dating Gavin Creel.
My never-gonna-happen fantasies LOATHE the bastard.
I wasn't impressed by TNN trailer (I'm praying they don't plan on airing this on TV. The editing is AWFUL.) Ryan Murphy's eye rolling dialogue is such a turn off for me. However, I do like Rannells and I'm not going to base my judgement on the trailer so I will be watching. I hope it does well. I'm assuming this is NBC's version of Modern Family.
I assumed it was another version of "Modern Family" as soom as I read the premise, just like "Smash" is "Glee" in sheep's clothing. Isn't that what TV does best, recycle? I wasn't impressed with the trailers and I agree with those who don't think Rannell transfers well to TV. He seemed too "on" in the clip I saw. I also agree that the potential sentimentality factor could be problemmatic.
Does anyone else think they look alike?
No.
