Heading to NYC next month- is Tribes worth seeing?

Absolutely. It's the best play on the New York stage right now. I reviewed it here: http://scribicide.com/2012/03/30/tribes-quite-personal-and-quite-loud/

I saw the play with the original cast recently and didn't much like it. Yes, I had trouble hearing some of the dialogue but the main problem was that the characters were quite unlikeable as a whole. Especially the unbearably boorish father who turned me off the play within the first two minutes. I never fully recovered. I did rather like the boy's girlfriend whom he brings home to meet his family. The performer happened to be the one understudy on that evening. I never did figure out the older brother's problem. I thought the mother might turn out to be the rock solid center of the play, but she contributed little to the family dynamic. "Speak softly and carry a little stick" was her motto apparently. I hadn't realized the premise of the play was so controversial in some circles. Possibly if I knew more about the issue I could have related more.

I found it pretty fascinating. Whether or not it's a good play, that's up to you. But I found the subject matter interesting. The idea that, as a deaf person, how can you possibly have a personality and express it if the language you use does not allow it. They bring up the idea of sarcasm. You can't be sarcastic in sign language because it's all through tone of voice, etc.

I didn't quite get the ending, but I still liked it.

I liked it very much. Wonderfully directed.
