"I have hesitated seeing this because I heard the sound was waaaay too loud. Did you find that to be the case or have they toned it down?"

I saw it twice. Once towards the very end of previews and once recently. It's still loud but toned down. Generally, I think they're going for a concert vibe at times but during the preview performance it felt like the orchestra/band was too loud (like out of balance with the singers' mics) at times. I think that's mostly fixed.

Thanks for the reply, Vintage. I almost didn't bother to wade through the crap posts but am now thankful I did.

Saw the show last night. The production values--set pieces, costumes--are quite sumptuous. This show would make a great sit-down at a Vegas hotel. The sound was just right, and the performers attractive and full of energy. Some of the choreography was clever (a wink to Onna White's "Lot of Living to Do" in the  film of BYE BYE BIRDIE), some funny (the swimming/beach numbers) and some dazzling throughout.  It's especially appealing, I think, to  Baby Boomers, who should recognize every song (I did.).  Even the cheesily done numbers had redeeming value in that they elicited good-natured laughter. Several little white papers fell out of my playbill, too, which had me wondering whether last night's Alice in Wonderland figure--the young woman in the long blond wig at the center of the piece--was an understudy.  Her baby-like voice was slightly irritating. She seemed like a mashup of two Kristins:  Bell and Chenoweth. Fine separately but together, not so much. The older woman who began the show with "Windmills of Your Mind" had a gorgeous, deeper voice that I never tired of, even if her appearances did sometimes seem at odds with the "story" at hand. Was it JEROME ROBBINS' BROADWAY?  No, of course not.  But it was entertaining.  A shame the theater looked less than half full.

It could have been an understudy but that sounds pretty much like Kelly Felthous. I thought her voice worked for the music. And it helped me avoid unfavorable comparisons to say, Connie Francis. I knew pretty much all of the songs, minus maybe one or two, but I know I'm not a typical 20-something. Still, I think you can enjoy the show fine without being familiar with the songs.
