I had a great time at the show and thought all 4 actors were really great, with Sutton and Bobby being the standouts to me. The house manager told me that every preview has been sold out so far....good luck to the cast and crew on a great opening night tomorrow!!!
I've gotta say. I also saw this today, and I was appalled. I've been a big fan of Sutton Foster's in musicals, and I just thought they wildly miscast her here. Looking back, I'm pretty sure the play was doomed to begin with, but if not, her casting may have been the final blow. Is she supposed to be the happy, positive dominatrix? That will burst into song at any minute? Shame on Second Stage, and Foster's agents. They MUST have been able to find her a better vehicle for her first play. She comes across in this like she can't even act....
I wildly disagree, I think in casting Sutton the director and writer had a clear and specific vision of what they wanted Prudence to be. She gives such human qualities to a job, dominatrix, that so many people have such stereotypical views about. I also think the play doesn't set out to be about the dominatrix but more the person behind it, and that goes for every character, exploring who they are behind the facade and their faults.
But from all the shows I've seen her in, they are only different on paper. They were exactly the same from her performance. (I certainly have NOT seen ALL of her work, however.)
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
