Typical Preview Period

How long is the average (if there is such a thing) preview period for a new Broadway show? By my calculations, 1984 will have had more than four weeks of previews before it officially opens, which I believe will be on June 22. Having seen it on the first Saturday of its preview period, the show felt "done" to me. Is this a long preview period for a show like 1984?

A typical preview period varies based on the needs of a production. If a show has been mounted off-Broadway, for example, and moves to Broadway very quickly and alters very little, the preview period may only be about 2 weeks to accommodate critics and some technical finessing. For a show like 1984 which, while done previously elsewhere, requires a lot of TLC from the crew behind the scenes, the preview period is longer. It's all about how long it'll take to "freeze" the show. Heavy tech and special affects require more time, even if they seem finished on the first preview. It's really up to the producers to work out a plan that works for everyone involved.
