I agree that Wildhorn is under-rated. I love his music and I liked J & H and THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL so much that I went to see them both twice on Broadway. I was also quite blown away by THE CIVIL WAR.
I was lucky enough to be in New York during the short run of a few other under-rated shows that I also rather liked - STEEL PIER, JANE EYRE, BIG and SUESSICAL.
And I think one of the most under-rated musicals is ALW's THE BEAUTIFUL GAME - it my favorite of any ALW show. It has an exquisite score and a very strong Ben Elton libretto that is witty, powerful and poignant.

Parade & Ragtime? I think they are both fantastic shows - but didn't they both win Tonys for Best score? That means they are quite highly rated - and deservedly so.

I think this show is perfectly constructed and scored - but audiences will stay away in droves. They say the plot is confusing and hard to follow. hmmmmmm. Four couples are w/ the wrong partners, at the end of the show they are w/ the right partners. Sounds quite simple to me.
A beautifully produced production of this at a regional theatre can come close to killing the theatre.

"The Life" was a wonderful show. I remember that one when I was a little lad.
"I'm learning to dig deep down inside and find the truth within myself and put that out. I think what we identify with in popular music more than anything else is when someone just shares a truth that we can relate to. That's what I'm searching for in my music." - Ron Bohmer
"I broke the boundaries. It wasn't cool to be in plays- especially if you were in sports & I was in both." - Ashton Kutcher
I love THE LIFE! Whenever I mention it to my friends, they look at me like I have three heads. (I explain it to them being similar to Sweet Charity.) I remember being may be 10 or 11 and watching the performance of "My Body" on the Tony Awards and loving it! The music is incredible (Favorite song: Easy Money) and I wish this show would pop up more. Other shows: Tom Sawyer, which I wanted to see so badly on Broadway, Urinetown, which is know is very popular but should have won the damn tony for best musical even though I know it was against thoroughly modern millie, and The Wild Party Off-Broadway Version, just because the score kicks a$$!

I agree with Jekyll and Hyde and The Scarlet Pimpernel. Jekyll and Hyde is my favorite show aside from Sweeney and Les Mis.
"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."
I think Ragtime is under-rated. It's not often mentioned or talked about or dicussed, and wasn't awarded the Tony Award for Best Musical. It lost to Fosse. Don't get me started on that fiasco.
I also think the current 42nd Street revival is under-rated. Many people are saying it should close. But watching that brings joy to my heart, as corny as it sounds. That dancing is really exhilarating, and the story is just so "Broadway".
I think you got the facts slightly wrong - RAGTIME did not lose out to FOSSE for the Best Musical Tony. The BEst Musical Award in 1998 went to THE LION KING - and RAGTIME won 4 Tonys, including Best Book and Best Score. (I'm not trying to put you down btw - everyone makes mistakes, including me.)
And I agree with you about Ragtime _ I think that along with FOLLIES, it's the best musical ever written. I was just questioning the definition of the term "under-rated" - what criteria does one use to define whether something is underrated? (Sorry for being so pedantic - maybe it's something that comes with old age LOL)

Again, I don't know just how underrated Ragtime is but I think it's definitely an amazing show.
I don't think Rent is underrated, maybe a bunch of people around here don't like it or are tired of hearing about it, but I think it gets/got the recognition it deserves!
