Looks like playbill updated their records, Sweeney took in $750,000
Sweeney Todd
Buckets of blood and positive notices translated into big box office for the new Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, which tallied a weekend wrap of more than $750,000, according to a production spokesperson.

I couldn't be happier for the whole cast.
This show deserves to run for a long time.
Also, I think this narrows down the theatre possibilities for THE WEDDING SINGER. I think the answer is obvious.

The show was PACKED on Sunday.
Only a few box seats were empty.

Not to throw a monkey wrench into everyone's enthusiasim, but Jersey Boys has yet to crack 70 percent. In fact they lost attendance their opening week. And they are averaging around 60 percent in general. These aren't great numbers, if any other show had these numbers you all would say it's in trouble.
Does anyone know what JB needs weekly to meet their margin?

Posted: 11/7/05 at 6:24pmThey lost paid attendance because they would have been comping the press performances and the opening night. All shows attendance dips in opening week because of that.

To be fair, the JERSEY BOYS reviews just came out.
You need to let the reviews take affect, TomasMarx.

Posted: 11/7/05 at 6:31pmYes I can read, I was talking about last week's sales and future sales not based on an arbitrary "good review" spike. But thanks for being so nasty!

$500,000 in 3 days. That doesn't sound like very much if Jersey Boys took in $400,000 in 1 day. I found an old NYT article that said Gypsy sold about $1 million worth of tickets its opening weekend. Does anyone know how Sweeney compares to the other recent Sondheim revivals or other revivals in general did?

Posted: 11/7/05 at 11:06pmI take it though that everything is going well over at the O'Neill as a certain dumpster diving columnist hasn't written anything about the show has he, which must mean there's nothing unpleasant going on. I mean I realize LuPone isn't exactly Hugh Jackman, but she can't be that low on the radar screen or maybe he only really knows stuff spoon fed to him by the Weisslers?

Posted: 11/8/05 at 7:06pmWhen people say "comps" is the reason Jersey Boys didn't do well, I can't help but laugh. Look at the past 4 weeks. Even with previews (and no "comps") the show was poor in attendance. It's not the comps, it's the people. Most people don't want see this show, and I'm predicting that trend will continue!

Posted: 11/8/05 at 7:30pmJersey Boys opened previews to no buzz whatsoever. The show was discounting like crazy to sell seats. Last week they were comping the press and this week some of the same for the out of towners. The week beginning November 14 will be the test and attendance will be over 95%. Just around the time Woman In White gets panned.

Gee dd...thanks for bringing my attention to my avatar.
I had no idea what it said--not the mention the fact that I didn't even know it was there whatsoever.
Thank the Broadway lord for ddtruitt!
(And Vinnie too...they both make us all feel better about how much we respect and know about theatre. Other peoples' ignorance is a bliss)
