Why are the whackjobs (pun not intended) ALWAYS from Florida???
^^^^ I can't deny your basic premise (and I am from Florida myself), but South Florida is not a "whackjob". I don't quite understand his objection, but I'm sure he has his reasons.
I'm not speaking for SF, but I will admit that my sadness is for the passing of a part of my life, not really for MTM. I did not know her personally, after all.

I was always a Mary Tyler Moore fan from her show, don't remember the Dick Van Dyke show as much. Watched her show every Sat night. As I read elsewhere it was a great television night on CBS in the 70's. Still remember the show and of course the classic theme song. Have been rewatching episodes on youtube tonight and remembering her..
Also loved seeing her at Broadway Barks. She wasn't there in person the last several years with Bernadette, but she was always there in spirit.
She was a very special lady and she, along with Marlo Thomas, were groundbreakers for women in television in the 70's. They showed it was okay to be a single woman and that not being married wasn't the end of the world.

RIP!
When I saw THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, she was sitting two seats away in front of me. I was half-distracted because seeing her evoked the laughter that I have associated with her show. I was also lucky to have seen the Boston tryout of BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S a very long time ago.
One of the reasons I was excited to move to Minneapolis. Saw the house they used several times. RIP. You kept me company as a kid in black and white and later in color on Saturday nights.

Such sad news - such a talent! She will be missed. I have to say - Sutton Foster reminds me of her a little. RIP MTM.
Did anyone see the CBS Special on her last night? Hosted by Gayle King. Interersting until it was taken over by Oprah, who of course made it all about her.

Way back in 1978 a young songwriter named Doug Mishkin wrote a song about Mary Tyler Moore's TV show going off the air. His mother (yes, his mom) took it upon herself to get a cassette of the song to Mary.
A year later Mary wrote Doug a sweet note -- interesting to see that way back then both Doug and Mary had their parents helping them take care of business. Here's the note from Mary: March 18, 1979:
Dear Mr. Mishkin,
My parents, who are indeed derelict in relaying messages and tapes, just gave me the tape your mother sent them only a year ago. Time has only enhanced its meaning for me. I thought you should know that I appreciate your having directed your talent toward a subject very dear to me.
It’s lovely. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Mary Tyler Moore
I made a video for Doug's song and it's gotten more than 4,000 views in two days on FB. Doug is a lawyer in D.C., still writing songs, but not professionally. His brother is Budd Mishkin, you might know from NY1. Budd didn't know about the Mary letter til yesterday. Hope you enjoy the song and video.

If anyone is interested, 20/20 is doing a special on her tonight (Friday night) and Sunday morning on CBS will have a MTM segment as well.

Also, look for the PBS documentary, Mary Tyler Moore: A Celebration. And, reflecting on the Kennedy Center Honors thread, I'm shocked that Mary was never honored.
