It is a business "

CurtainPullDowner, you've implied more than once on this thread and I believe on others that the massive wealth of John McColgan and Moya Doherty is certain keep the Pirate Queen running for a long time. I don't agree with this. These two earned all that money by producing the extremely profitable "Riverdance". They aren't a charitable organization charged with keeping money losing shows open. If Pirate Queen doesn't succeed in filling the Hilton most of the time it will become an enormous financial drain. While I have no doubt McColgan and Doherty will invest whatever it takes to bring their vision of Pirate Queen to fruition I don't believe they will keep sinking money into the show after it opens if it becomes clear there's no hope of ever seeing a profit.

The British MEGAmusical days are eroding slowly. The old favorites are doing fine, but sung-through shows, which was a trademark of the megamusical, are no longer as popular.

When was the last time a sung through show opened on Broadway and played for YEARS, and had a large production? I can't think of many, if any.

How to properly use its/it's: Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...

As far as I can tell from Castcom and word around town, Pirate Queen is no longer sung through, but rather has a brand new book complete with spoken dialogue scenes.

And regarding the discussion as to whether or not there is still an audience for the big British Epic Musical, look at the line at Phantom and Les Miz every night. I understand those are "proven" shows. But if Pirate Queen is GOOD, I think there is no doubt people will go. I dont think it has anything to do with the "type" of show it is. Rather it is the quality of the show.

Remember, these are the kind of shows that brought ticket prices up to the insane places they are now. So if the show ends up being well done, I think audiences will appreciate seeing the money on the stage.

I'm seeing it this week, so I'll report on the quality factor then.

Really looking forward to your thoughts, queenbee, as well as those of everyone else going.

"As far as I can tell from Castcom and word around town, Pirate Queen is no longer sung through"

I saw one of the first Chicago previews and then watched the "frozen" version that was reviewed a few weeks later and was struck by how much spoken dialogue had been added. There is a lot of detailed information that needs to be conveyed for this story to make sense.

At that time I wondered if the show could still be considered "sung through", not that this is an important distinction to me. Certainly a lot of the story and character information is still conveyed in song.
