LOL...I saw this thread and thought MORLOCKS, The Musical!

Taboo..well it was a "flop" but I love it..idk if it's considered 'underground'

..I love Bare and Zanna, Dont!

And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.

Not sure if this counts because it has such a cult-like following, but Bat Boy: the musical is amazing, both the off-Broadway and London casts!

Have you ever heard of TIME the musical? VERY good. :)

Underground sort of suggests some kind of kicky twist, so some of my favorites may not fit the bill, though they are certainly underappreciated.

Violet, by Tesori and Crawley
The Fix, by Rowe and Dempsey
Zombie Prom, by Rowe and Dempsey

Additionally, I can't say enough good about Floyd Collins. It's probably mainstream to most theater buffs, but it's representation on this board pales in comparison to Bare.

Metropolis takes place underground.

Oh, Zombie Prom. I heart that show. I also like Metropolis.

I suppose Carrie the musical would count on this list, too. Those of us who have seen/heard the unofficial audio/video of the show know what the rest of the world missed.

"A New Brain" is awesome.

Also, "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman!" has it's moments.

Oh, A NEW BRAIN is wonderful. "I Sing" is awesome too, not sure if that's underground, but it's def. not that popular. "The it girl" is good too.

Danny & Sylvia. i don't know if there's a recording of it out yet, but i'm almost positive it's opening in London in october/november.

if you're in london, go see it. it's fabulous. it's the story of danny kaye and sylvia fine. it's only 2 characters, the music is catchy and it's really wonderful :)

If you want a huge piece of silly fluff, I love "A Year With Frog and Toad." Its adorable, and surprisingly, really good music as well.

I don't understand what you mean by "underground musical" (off-Broadway musicals? Shows with cult followings?), but certainly HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is the most remarkable musical that most people might not be familiar with.

Here's a few that I enjoy:

Amour
A Man of No Importance
Bat Boy
Hedwig and the Angry Inch

I don't know if Urinetown and Avenue Q are too mainstream for you but they make for a fun listen.

New Brain gets my vote. One I don't know about but heard of is Silence (it's The Silence of the Lambs the musical) Very disturbing that someone would turn it into a musical. No idea who wrote it; my friends were talking about it yesterday.

Gosh. I would love to get every single one of these! I love hearing stuff that not a ton of other people know. However, I am still working on my collection of more well-known stuff THEN I can get into the other, more exciting stuff. I am so jealous of these people who say they have over 400 recordings. I have like 20 or 30 at most.

Does "CHESS" count? I think that's pretty good.

In this country, "Barbarella: The Musical" is extremely underground. It got an (unfairly IMHO) incredibly bad line from the critics when it opened in Vienna, and its box office failings could be attributed as much to the fact that it was a fun, fluff piece which opened in a city known for producing haughty high art as anything else - the score managed to mantain a sence of theatricalness while still sounding appropriately futuristic, and the tech (esp. the lighting) was just eye-popping.

Unfortunately, it failed to find a wide audience, and the die hards were mostly students who saw the show at massive concession (2.50 standing room or 11 euro student seats), and the cast recording never made it to store. Fortunately, a hundred or so copies were distributed by lottery, and a couple of kind individuals let other fans in on the sounds...

what i mean by underground is either stuff thats like off broadway or has a cult like following...so i guess most of these work for it....now i just gotta save up enough money to get them...or find them somewhere even. It's really incredibly hard to find cds that arent so popular in my town. Plus they're not that many people in my area who are into the unkown. like sure, they like wicked and Phantom...and I like those too, but sometimes the off broadway stuff seem to be a little more...i dont really know how to describe it....more emotional or more comedic...more real life? even if the are fantasy lol. im sure you guys know what i mean. But i'll definately have to look itno these shows. Thanks for all of your great advice!!!

And I do have Chess its really good
